Took train from France to Germany in December; no passport checks at the border.

Yep, it's exactly like australia now. You can probably get away with it while you're there, but visa overstayers risk fines and/or being banned from re-entry in the future. I have no idea what the likelihood of getting away with it is, but seems like adding 2 months in north america to 3 months in europe might be cheaper in the long run.

Also, I was in Europe at the end of last year, got my passport checked 3 times in 3 months (once crossing a border, twice was random cops on trains), would've been busted for sure if the visa was out of date.

Still cracks me up (granted grungy climbers hardly make up the main tourist dollar)
These are TOURIST visas - they are not going to steal anyone's jobs... TOURISTS = MONEY

Dammit Europe,... ahh what's the point...
