Does anyone know anything about the new fence blocking access to Narrabeen Steep Side and Pootang ?

No, through the bush or along the road?
Maybe change the topic to fence narrabeen steep side?

It's along the side of the road and across the access track. There's a padlocked gate further West. The Western end of the fence is still under construction.

Just found this:
http://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/carnage-on-the-wakehurst-parkway-fence-plan-20120803-23ja0.html
"In the month to July 12, motorists killed 18 swamp wallabies, 12 brushtail possums, eight ringtail possums, three long-nosed bandicoots, a currawong and a brush turkey"

it must have been the brush turkey that finally made them do something....

I'll see if I can get some access ticking along.

There's still a narrow gap at the cutting where the fencing is coiled away from the rock. I'd assume this will be closed. A spring loaded gate would be nice. The pic is facing the start of the track.

so what happens to the wildlife in this situation? can they no longer get across to the other side of the road? wildlife bridges/tunnels or just let them stare at their mate across the road?

Good one climberman.

I haven't noticed any tunnels and there's no bridges, bw.

just a general wondering tony, just sticking up a fence seems very knee jerk/stop-gap...

http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadprojects/projects/sydney_region/northern_sydney_region/nth_beaches_roadkill_study/index.html

might give some extra background.

I guess the folks involved in the lobbying don't think of it as knee-jerk, considering they've been pushing for years.

I dunno where they go from or to (the fences) but there are a number of bridges along the Parkway.

It's always hard to retrospectivly manage wildlife on a road. Do heaps of road kill mean a big, viable population ? Or a small, unviable, highly mobile population ? Is death by vehicle strike prefereable to inbreeding ? Who knows.... maybe reading the report would help.

thanks for the link cm; it says a 'long term option for consideration' is
"Installation or enhancement of fauna underpass structures"
so yeah, i guess it's being tossed around but i'll be surprised if they sack up the cash for it, should the studies determine they're needed. But that would be the way things tend to be
edit; thanks for making an access effort too btw, the crag is local to me :)

Bridges ? Do you mean the road bridge over the creek much further down ?
It would have to be a pretty big tunnel to get a wallaby to go through. I wonder if a zebra crossing with cattle grids on its sides would work ?

Ummm, if a 1.5m high chainlink fence is "blocking your access" to a climbing area, I would humbly suggest that perhaps you're in the wrong sport.

Tony - yeah, the creek bridges. That's a pretty typical thing to do with fauna crossings, funnel them to an existing potential crossing point. I've no idea what the bridges are like underneath. Nothing's easy.

Nah, it is easy to get the info as there are more than a few trolls on this forum that could tell you what the bridges are like underneath!
Heh, heh, heh.

Learn to read, if that is not beyond your abilities. "blocking access" not "blocking your access". It won't block climbers' nor bushwalkers' access for long and the purpose of the fence in protecting wildlife, will be defeated. It is fortunate the fence is not an indication of a new property development or land claim.

On a more serious note has anyone ever tried for yabbies in pools either side of the bridges?
