gfdonc, should I mention your response to my comment "A bush in the face is not what you want!"

I apologize for raising the issue on Chockstone DaCrux, but you wiggle your ears better than any other strong climber I know. As for Megan's party trick, I advise discretion.

Quo Vadis certainly keeps you working gfdonc. I think it's 19 in the book and 20 on thecrag.com. From what I've done at Arapiles around those grades, I don't object to it being considered 20. Our plan was to TR Missing Link, where I have some unfinished business, after QV but we'd also done a ground-up ascent of Bluff Major and decided to call it a day.

Ummm .. well .. I don't think it was anything to do with "a bird in the hand". Or maybe it was, indirectly? ;-) ;-) ;-)

Hey Steve. Glad you had a great time. Simey and I saw some of the action as we raced around the cliff base shooting topo images for the new guide. Brings back a few memories..... Chatted to Kevin Lindorff about Kachoong on the Saturday night at Eric Jones' birthday bash at the Nati Hall. Funny how a few red wines fire up the memory cells. Can't say the same about John Smart's words about Kachoong in the latest 'Rock'. His description of events were not quite how I remembered them. And there was certainly no fixed pin in the roof during the first ascent (nor when John Smart and Ajax Greene attempted the second ascent soon afterwards). The fixed pin appeared later on. I don't remember Kevin and I giving Kachoong a grade but I do remember that a few strong parties tried and failed to repeat it at the time. As there was no protection in the roof at all (and no camming devices around then) it was a fairly scary undertaking. If you fell off pulling the lip you were going for a major king swing back down and into the wall. Next year is the 30th anniversary of the first ascent and I may talk Kevin into joining me on swing across memory lane. I'll be sure to clip the pin though........ Glenn.

Hey Glenn, thanks. We had dinner with Kevin at the pub that night. Apparently he made a return visit to Birdman on Sunday, 23 years after the FFA. Who is going to post all the gossip, slander and innuendo from Eric's party?

Hmmm. Kevin's memory is still as sharp as a tack I see. He and I freed Birdman in Sept 1976 (the same day that we freed Saturation Point on Castle Crag). By my reckoning that's just shy of 30 years (not 23). Either that or I'm getting older and he's getting younger. Glenn.

Oops, probably my mistake, as the info was relayed third hand to me by some of his climbing companions who were next to us in Central Gully on Monday.

If you're interested. Apologies, they're as-yet unculled (and in need of a cull) but there's an index page of thumbnails to navigate by.

Acknowledgements and thanks to Mike Stone for playing photographer on the day.

Hmmm.

I'm only a South Australian and know few of the elder statesmen/women of Victorian rockclimbing, but I had the pleasure of climbing Quisling that weekend in front of one of the first ascentionists, Peter Watling. So it seems, most likely, that I was unwittingly proffering advice on photographing Kachoong to Michael Stone whose FA credits I think include Scorpion, Thunder Crack, Debutante and many other great climbs. This would be like teaching grandma to suck eggs.

I suggest the VCC issue blazers in State colours to Hall-of-Famers for ease of identification...
