What's the current state of the road into Bluestone Bay area? I have international friends who are hiring a campervan for their Tassie trip and need a free place to camp over xmas. Would they make it in? I've driven shitty Hyundai Getz into there about 5 years ago - but it certainly wasn't ideal.

I drove in last christmas, still sucks, the first 500m is fine, the rest is crap for a 2WD unless you're doing 5km/h. So, yes, you can still do it, just drive slower and pick the best line through...

Any other sneaky spots nearby for a couple of nights of car camping without the car destruction.

Yes, you can go to the River and Rocks campground. Here is a link: http://www.exploroz.com/Places/80797/TAS/River_and_Rocks_Rd_Camping_Area.aspx

I drove in there March last year. I put the Touareg into low-4w for a couple of the rutted spots, but was sufficiently embarrassed to find a hyundai or nissan 2wd in there ahead of us (rental), and an 18-seater school bus arrived later that day.
In other words, if you take it slow and get someone out to spot you you can probably muddle through.

That looks great Doug! I presume it's first come first served? Would it be mega packed with drunk fisherman at Xmas do you reckon?

yes, river and rocks will be packed over christmas. There is another hidden camping spot near the entry to moulting lagoon that not many people go to.

Could try Friendly Beaches, but it might be busy!

Yes, first come first served at River and Rocks.
Unfortunately, the Christmas/New Year period tends to be busy everywhere on the Freycinet Peninsula. If the weather is good, even the Whitewater Wall campsite is likely to be busy - and possibly with drunk fisherman - now that it seems to have found its way in to some free camping guide. We had a couple of 4X4 parties from W.A. leave a generator running all day to keep the fish in their fridge cold once while they were off somewhere for the day.
I'd be more inclined to steer clear of the area over that week and go to Ben Lomond, Mt Wellington or the Tasman Peninsula for a climbing fix and be in Freycinet either side of that period.
River and Rocks is a lovely spot and becoming an increasingly popular alternative to Whitewater Wall, especially if you want to do some other stuff while you're at Freycinet, e.g. some walking or water sports.

Lucky you. We were woken at 8am to a bunch of drunken, smoking fishermen (and women). This was after we didn't get to sleep until 3am due to ... drunken, smoking fishermen (and women). Bundy and coke, love, us guuuurrls LOVE it...
