Mt Rosea

After having read that more roads have been opened in the Grampians, I'm wondering if there is access yet to the parking lot below Mt Rosea, or if anyone has any idea about when it might be open if it isn't yet?

Have you had a look at the Grampians sections of http://cliffcare.org.au ?

[Edit: Looking at the PDF linked there: http://cliffcare.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/2011-08-01-recovery-note-grampians-national-park.pdf Rosea is still listed as closed ]

Thanks for that. Disappointing, but there you go. I saw on the first link that Silveband Rd is closed and not due to open until May 2010, but that "Zumsteins Shortcut" is open. According to the Mt Rosea guide, access is via Silverband Rd, but I wasn't sure which road was the "Zumsteins Shortcut" and was kind of hoping that you might get close enough for a longer but still manageable walk. I guess it's all academic though if the Mt Rosea walking track is still closed.

Something in this email from Parks last Monday :

"The Park is also working hard to reinstate access to the Pinnacle via the Sundial Car Park and via Halls Gap over Mackay’s Peak in time for the School Holidays in September. "

I'm guessing that's not via road (from Northen Grampians road) but by track up from Halls Gap.

News from Parks is that road access is now available to the Sundial Car Park but only via an approach from the west, from Wartook. The roads from Halls Gap are still closed. The road from the Sundial turn-off to Rosea car park is still closed though it wouldn't add too much to the walk for the adventurous. This would also give access to the climbs normally accessed from that car-park.
Parks have also changed their web-site, the new URl for the Grampians is
http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/grampians-national-park.

You are right kieran, but officially things are moving ... I talked to Dave - the head ranger - about access to Rosea and Bundaleer at the Advisory Group meeting last week. There are a few issues with Vicroads possibly using the Rosea carpark for their continuing work on the Silverband Rd but access to both is certainly now on his agenda. Tracey will be arranging a site visit with him in the next few weeks and it shouldn't take long after that to get us back to both cliffs.

On another tangent, what's Dave's surname? I had a run in with a guiding company that I want to send him a letter about.

Ooh! Do Tell! We have been quiet around for a while. A good slag fest would do us all good.

This is starting to sound good! How long of a walk would it be from the Sundial Car Park though? BTW: that link doesn't seem to be working ...

Bit of a walk. Might be able to park at the road closed sign which would cut it down a lot.

Thanks for the excellent, detailed update Tracey. Great job on the liaison front.
Unfortunately, it looks like I won't be able to get to Rosea or Bundaleer now until the autumn as I will be heading back to Tassie at the end of the month. I'll keep an eye on this thread.

Up at Rosea today recovering some gear left behind a year ago! Brilliant weather - this next week looks like the best climbing conditions at Rosea for a long time.

Yes, the cams would not have got much, if any, direct light and the slings look pretty good but they will be replaced. The cams themselves need a bit of rehabilitation. Obviously no-one had been on the climb (Matador) in the year since they were left.
