Merri Creek Glue up......

Theres a glue up on a flood retaining wall thats almost opposite Mt studley (up stream 100m). Its about 6-9 meters tall with holds going all the way to the top including some bolt on holds.... i put the first ones there, but they nearly all broke off due to the crap cement, it was a low traverse...... now theres a heap or train track rocks glued all the way up and quite a few holes drilled as there as if more bolt on holds to come... does any one know anything about this, whether bolts are going to sprout? Due to the possible explosive nature of the surface they are attatched to it makes a solo assent bold to say the least... there is the possibility there to have a really cool climbing wall....

I don't know anything about this wall but drilled holds in a building structure are a big no-no. They can compromise the integrity of the structure by letting water seep into the reinforcing structure. Whoever has drilled the holds should consult someone who knows about engineering and plug those holes securely.
It's a flood retaining wall: you don't mess about with these.

Half the buildings in Melbourne CBD are full of concrete cancer, few holes in a retaining wall isn't the end of the world. If anything, might give someone a remedial job in 20-30 yrs.

From the sound of it, you want to get out of there. You don't want guilt by association.
Maybe contact the Access Officer and explain the situation and have them approach the local council. It might be that the drilled holes are part of a reconstruction project or they might have been drilled years ago or someone might have drilled them recently.

Its not worth all the trouble, its pretty limited and dull only its 5 mins from my house so i would have a play on it if it were to become bolted... just wondering if thats the plan???

I walked down the Merri Ck yesterday and spotted a very short (6m) high natural basalt wall with a rap chain at the top. It looked fairly easy - maybe grade 14 or so. Who said there isn't natural rock crags in Melbourne!

About one km upstream from Dights Falls. On non-city side of the creek.

Hey Neil that looks like the little cliff in Quarries Park - there are a few scrappy little bits along there on both sides of the creek. All pretty ordinary though.

They won't look ordinary when i do a photo shoot at sunset with greased noodle arm boy Joe himself pumping hard on some of the killer 'classics'. Oh the hype job......

you realise this last post of yours throws all your previous posts about classic new routes in the Grampians into doubt. Next you'll be dropping guidebook pages from the sky like leaflets....:)

Actually this brings back memories from the mid-seventies: an article by Rein Kamar about Bumbo's Flying Circus, a bluestone quarry in Altona (more about this later).
Rein was apprehensive about spending his day off on crumbling bluestone : "I've climbed at Merri Creek".
Maybe it's the same cliff at Merri Creek.
Bumbo's Flying Circus is now an underground car park.
