I know it's not exactly 'just down the road a bit' but there is excellent granite bouldering outside of Townsville.

Worth taking a bouldering pad. I spend a few months up there a year for the past couple of years and have been developing a heap of bouldering on the beaches and headlands between Port Douglas and Cairns. Some amazing problems on predominantly solid rock, in stunning views. Well over a hundred problems have been done, up to about V6 - but very little has been graded, named or recorded. PM me if you would like a bit of beta on area's, access etc. Plenty of untouched stuff on the hillside (in thick scrub), but with ease of access to the beaches, we are years off having to explore in there!

Also some amazing looking large faces in the hills above Mossman and Mossman Gorge. Looks like a mission to get in though, and the whole region is indigenously significant and used for cultural and historical tours...

I have done a bunch of bouldering around Mossman Gorge, it's awesome fun place to hang about if you are respectful and discrete - I guess it is a sacred site.

Mt Stuart is only a 4-5 hour drive away as well - don't camp there, we did and had a 2am visit from the cops who thought from our car that we'd gone over the edge. They were just about to call in the chopper to search for our bodies - honestly.

There is some bouldering in Port Douglas. Various grades with beautiful views. Just off the beach.
