Will be up in Canberra for the long weekend and was thinking of wandering past Niblo Boulders at some point as it's near my olds' place. Looking at the guide, the first 20 odd problems don't have grades: http://www.canberraclimbing.org.au/routes--guides/cooleman-ridge.aspx

Any clues?

Most are very easy by bouldering standards with generally excellent landings - perhaps V0-V2. There are harder ones around but they are few and far between.

Thanks Cruze, that's good to hear. I won't have a pad so I don't know how much I'll get done but it'll be good to get out and do something.

I don't get out bouldering very often so easy sounds good.

Is it true Black Mountain Tower looked like a rocket ship taking off the other day?

Don't go bouldering on Black Mountain, they're garbage eliminates

Niblo is quite nice if you like afternoon sun, horses, mountain views, and chipped holds.........I like the place, but it was very local for me (afj a weston creeker? who would've guessed?)

Black Range is better if you have most of a day..............but, since you're actually a climber, you should go to Gibralter instead.

I'm yet to see evidence of quality bouldering at Tidbinbilla

If you're happy to run the approach, 4hrs free is enough for a decent climbing session at Red Rocks. Its really neat climbing (gr17-25), arvo shade, on the river (swimming after climbing is sweet).............the place is waaay more interesting than the granite boulders!

There is so much granite bouldering around the ACT its not funny. I find it hard to believe there is rock in the Corrin Rd area that rivals the Black Range stone. The Black Range is in NSW and is much better than any ACT granite.

That said I reckon you can have fun at pretty much any established area without a guide as long as you know you are going to find a rock.

Highly rate Red Rocks. People talk about the walk in so often. Why? Its a flat highway to a sport crag by the river. Does it ever get busy? In my limited experience I've never seen anyone else there.

On a (slightly) related topic, I'm moving to Canberra during the next few months. From a climbing perspective, where would you advise I live for the optimum climbing convenience?

I'll be working at the University of Canberra, and would ideally like to be within a 1/2 hour cycle, but could be persuaded further south if the climbing options improve substantially.

Noted. Might have trouble with the commute though.

As for the climbing style, like most folks out there, it depends on how much time I have. A few hours = outdoor bouldering or a trip to the gym. A day = cragging.

I have numerous friends that live/have lived in southern Canberra. Housing seems cheap and in established rather than "new" suburbs. Corrin/Kambah is a stones throw. Booroomba isn't much closer than Bungonia in driving time. From my memory UC is in buttf--- nowhere. Does it still have a bouldering wall?

Note. A big plus in living in southern Canberra is Dan Murphys Tuggrenong. This place is unreal.

UC is pretty much right next to Belconnen shops, so it is actually quite central... to the northside. I grew up in Chapman which is the suburb next to Cooleman ridge. Great place although I don't know how busy tugg parkway would get going to UC each day. Inner north suburbs are good but exo. National library traverse is best training wall in any city I've ever been near.

So if you had enough coin I would live in Turner which puts you in <30 min (?) ride over Bruce Ridge to UC. Close to city/bars/pubs and a <30 min ride to Nat Library.

I believe that UC bouldering wall was moved to PCYC in Turner (?) near city. Don't know if it was ever fixed up.

I was at red rocks last weekend. The water was just too high to jump, but so slow flowing that the swim was easy and pleasant. The climbs are shady from about 2.

Great question? Anybody confirm if the Belconnen bowl is still around? I just discovered that Baccus Marsh has a really fun 4 ft bowl and a 5 ft miniramp too. Great for recovery days.
