If something as small as that can't be adequately signed to warn people then we may as well shut the Park down permanently. It's just too bloody dangerous. There is always going to be minor damage in the park. There has to be some better solution than total closure.

True, but would it be any different if the road was under Park's control?

Larger parts of the Great Ocean Road were damaged in the same period and it was only closed for a few days. Go figure.

Well considering that PV and all the Councils have used every sign in their yards they don't have signs to put on every hole.
You seem to be an expert onpark management, highways and legal liability. How about offering an infallible solution?
And PV don't manage that road, so No, it won't make a difference.

Does anyone know the true legal position? Can you be fined for driving along Red Rocks Road at the moment?

I thought some climbers had already been fined (considerably) for driving on that road recently?

Does anyone have any FACTS about this? Sounds like a scare story to me.

The problem is that Kieran is hoping to use sensible judgement and personal responsibility..............in the face of OH+S insanity and with insurance companies dictating policy, those outdated ways of thinking are completely obsolete.

I don't think that any of the bullshit can be changed, but good on you Kieran for going and investigating the actual situation, and for calling it as it is.

If only STEALTH wasn't such a pussy, he might have popped out to have a look for himself too!

The road closure is at the National Park boundary; it sure looks to me like a National Park closure, not a VicRoads closure.

Also, I may have exagerated the ONE SQUARE METRE. Here's a photo so others can judge. I would prefer not to share the road with a driver who would have an accident due to this.

(Mandatory public servant disclosure. I work for VicRoads but the views expressed above are my own.)

You can be fined for driving on a closed road and Red Rocks Road is currently closed. It has gates with signs stating the situation.

There are holes bigger than that in my street from the floods. Including one deeper one marked with a sign saying "water over road" (?$%^&^?) that blocks off half the road and basically most of the road material washed off in the area of the ford on little nati creek such that it's quite the bumpy rid through there now. They've never closed my road though.

Still not seeing much of a risk of being fined.

Say you are parked somewhere along this road and a Parks Vic ranger finds your car. He calls up the Police in Hamilton or Horsham to send a car out to slap a ticket on the car for the heinous crime of driving along a perfectly good road that hasn't had its insurance assessment done yet.

Do you reckon the Police would bother with this?

All the Ranger has to do is record vehicle details etc and VIOLA!
Send it off to the Police and you receive an infringement notice.
Being a dick and driving around closed signs is only dragging out the work, and could compromise PV getting insurance$ to fix roads.
And for the Information of James Mac, all the bitumen roads running through the Grampians are managed by Vicroads.
Also read my previous comment of someone caught by plod at Abrupt. $250 and 3 demerit points.
Also, being behind a legal closure invalidated any insurance you may have, and should you break down RACV or towing company can charge you as much as they want to recover your damaged vehicle.
Unless you a re a litigation lawyer or civil engineer who has assessed the roads you really don't have any arguments against the closures.

Hmmm - not sure that the Rangers have that authority. Do we really have such a powerful police state enforcing this mindless nannying?

Actually I am a litigation lawyer with a degree in civil engineering so I should be ok.

Council employees do (and they don't even have to leave a note on your windshield if "Stopping would cause further disruption to traffic" - you just get a note in the mail). Why wouldn't rangers?

Rangers do have that authority. Years ago we were doing some weed control work with the ranger at arapiles out the back in winter and came across a car on the closed road. Peter H took their number and it turned out to be someone very senior in the Horsham public service. They paid up without a whimper.
As to the risk of getting caught - there is quite a bit of activity related to controlled burning happening in the area and the Victoria valley International Airport is in full swing with fire control activities. So your chances of striking a PV car are probably higher than normal.

Of course the rangers have that sort of power! How else would they fine people for breaking other rules such as stealing firewood, camping where they shouldn't etc etc...

OK so what about if you parked your car on the side of an open road such as the Henty Highway.... and CYCLED on the roads which are closed to drivers? Can you be fined for cycling on the closed roads?

Don't know Jac. Can't see what damage that could cause though. The road is open for several km off the Henty highway until the track where the log trucks go into the plantation.
