While your at it with requests/feedback someone should check the white stormwater drain above wall 2. It appears to be blocked near the first 90deg and the overflow from this blockage caused a lot of flooding which got to the level of the mats (got to that level within 5mins last time iwas there in a storm).

PS. If for whatever reason you get pushback on the light thing you should still see if you can get the existing light repositioned. Moving it 90deg so it is directing light down and toward the walls rather than only toward the path would not really affect light on the bike path but would make a lot of difference to the amount of light shed on the walls.

Got down there early this morning and with some assistance from a couple of others, stripped all three walls.

Hang on! Are my eyes deceiving me? That looks like one vertical wall and two steep things that only go halfway up then do stupid mantles onto ledges!?! I thought Burnley was deisgned by climbers......I thought it was s'posed to be good......my woody shits all over that lot!

the photos are deceptive- the walls are higher than they appear, and the ledge on top is not designed as a mantle, its to stop people getting inside! They'd be pretty hard mantles i'd say too.

One Day Hero needs to put his palms where his mouth is .. let's organise a visit to Burnley to watch him mantle over the top there.

Piece of piss! For some reason I have very calloused, sticky palms.......fantastic for mantling :)

I thought that stuff gave you baby soft skin... though I guess that'd be on your stomach not your palms...

Thanks for the heads up stugang.

Contacted Southern Link Upgrade, they said (in part):

"With respect to the drainage - CityLink have a crew on the road on Saturday night cleaning pits and pipes in this location."

So hopefully that will get sorted, just have to keep an eye on it when the Walls reopen.

No news yet, I'm going to follow up.

If we do get a positive response, are there any "sports facility lighting" experts who can give more specific details on what we might want?

The current bike path lights are amber street lights, but I thought we'd want some sort of white light so you can see the colour of the holds. Any other specification is beyond me though.

Also worth noting there is NO big comfy mattresses to fall on here. Just a slightly rubberised hard surface - so you could very easily smash your ankles to bits if it was any higher.

Hey guys, a certain Mr Gibson in brissy got my eyes on this and I just happen to be a lighting designer with a history in the (in)famous QUT Cliffhangers. Unfortunately I'm not planning a melbourne trip until next year or so, but until then I could perhaps help you out a bit and you bring me along when I get there, how does that sound?

I've only seen the few blurry pics in this thread so don't really know much about the place, any sketches or other photos? Any budget at all? (get southern link to pay for you, what are taxes for?!) Dimensions of the wall?

I could also use my contacts to find a lighting supplier in Victoria...

This photo was taken on the opening day - eventually it had a lot more holds on it (and looked much grubbier!). There are three walls - a 45 degree overhang, a 30 degree overhang and a vertical wall. All the same height and width.

Hi fructus, any help you can give will be appreciated.

Budget, don't know if it's going to happen, so no idea yet.
Don't have any dimensions to hand, may be able to dig out something later from old info?

The walls are attached to the road support pillars, Wall 1 and Wall 2 are back to back on one pillar, Wall 3 is on the next pillar facing Wall 2. In ajfclark's picture #2 above, you're looking at Wall 2 and you can just see the mats of Wall 3 the the lower right corner, the area is a bit longer than it is wide. Also the earth bank there is the river bank with the river at the bottom!

In nmonteith's picture the railings to the left are the bike path. The cabling and current bike path lights run along the outside of the last support beam on that side.

From the chockstone archives:

"The 45 and 30 degree walls will be in the region of 8 meters wide."

You can just see the light box in the top left of this picture

Sorry for the silence, it fell off the radar. Made a quick 3d model here: http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/5596/burnleywall.jpg
If that looks sort of correct in terms of size and layout I will make a couple of lighting options.

cheers

Got this reply to a recent inquiry:

Unfortunately we do not have a set date for the reopening of the climbing wall, however it is targeted to be open late in the year. The extended off-peak detour of the shared user path for works east of Burnley Harbour is targeted to be finished at the end of October, as due to their immensely disruptive nature they are being prioritised.
I apologise for not being able to give you a definitive date and will certainly inform you as soon as one is available.

Hi all,

latest on Burnley is not good I'm afraid, looks like we'll be waiting a while yet...

On Monday, 27 September 2010 11:31 AM, Southern Link Upgrade wrote:

As you know, CityLink is carrying out bridge strengthening works beneath the Burnley Viaduct to cater for the projected growth in the number and size of freight vehicles, resulting in the temporary closure of the Burnley Climbing Wall and Trail diversion.

The scope has prioritised those works east of Burnley Harbour in order to close out the extended off-peak detour for Main Yarra Trail users by the end of October 2010.

To do this however, and to ensure the safety of climbers, cyclists, pedestrians and workers during construction on the Burnley Viaduct, the SLU Alliance needs to continue to close the Burnley Climbing Wall and Main Yarra Trail between Barkly Avenue and Mary Street until Friday 11th March 2011.

I apologise for this inconvenience – if it is possible to close the works out sooner and reopen the Wall and Trail earlier I will let you know.

I could have predicted that.... :-(

I'm annoyed both for climing and cycling reasons. As one of the busiest cycle routes in Melbourne I wouldn't have hoped that a little more consideration could have been given.

Is the any other online source for this information?

What exactly are they doing which will take a full 12 months (optimistically) to complete?
