Does anyone know if there's climbing to be had in northern WA? I'll be moving up that way shortly, probably to Broome, but the rocks around Kununurra could lure me if you're allowed to climb there.

I've never been there but a climber mate from Queensland used to work there and I don't think he
climbed anything. He said the heat and humidity was evil, he was having 4 showers a day and moved
all their house into the one room that had air con.

I had some friends who after many years of staring at them, decided to try putting some routes up on the big cliff near the Pentecost crossing. It was one the most terrifying climbing experience of Lou's life. The rock isn't that great, there are no anchors at the top and they ended up abseiling off a tiny shrub. I'd write off climbing. The kimberley does have some of the best bushwalking in australia though, so I hope you're into walking. You can easily end up in places that people haven't been to since the aboriginal people left the land, discover unrecorded art sites and find your own tropical resort to camp at every night. And you can find the odd pool with a selection of deepwater soloing too. The Fitzroy is popular for paddling as well.

We climbed at a fabulous area, Nomad Springs aka The Mysto, on Mt Essendene in late May, perfect weather and great rock It included the amazing wave of rock with ness that was the cover of Rock in 2002(?). I'd guess you have 3 good months a year there. Kunanurra is a bit north of there. Among the choss there ias some good rock scattered through the desert. Many climbers have worked around the Hammersly and climbed there (Dave Wagland) and there is a guide to northern WA available.

Hmm, I just looked at a map and it's half a state away, still, you should have a few good months a year. Good luck

The devonian reef (includes Geikie and Windjana Gorges and Tunnel Creek has lots of limestone close to the road, though I imagine climbing is not permitted on lots of it for cultural reasons. You'll want to visit these areas anyway if you're living in the Broome area.

Windjana gorge is stunning and it would have heaps of good climbing, but I doubt you'd get permission to do it either. There might be some bouldering in the area - there's heaps of rock as you drive from there to Tunnel Creek, but I seem to remember thinking the landings weren't so flash. Or maybe it was that the spear grass would be over your head.
