Werribee Gorge or Camel's Hump?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a bit of advice. I'm a climber from Brisbane and am coming down to Melbourne for the cup next week. While I am down I want to take a mate of mine (who only climbs indoors) for a bit of outdoor climbing fun near the city. I had a look and it seems that either Werribee Gorge or Camel's Hump might be the place to go.

The limitations I have are that I will only be doing sport routes to save on luggage weight and only have a 50 m rope available. Keeping those two points in mind, which of the two places would you recommend climbing at? I climb up to 25-26ish but will probably just be setting up easier climbs for my friend.

Any advice would be appreciated.

At this time of year (ie spring/summer) i'd go to Mt Macedon. Werribie can get pretty damn hot. Also, Mt
Macedon is the prettier destination - and a much shorter walk in! There is enough quality sport routes to
keep you entertained on the Omega Block and plenty of easier ramble to get your friend up.

p.s. - get in early for either destination as real estate is very limited on the good routes.

I am sure you will have a giggle at either location. However a point in favor of Werribee:

Almost as easy as KP when it comes to setting up a top rope.

Thanks heaps for your help guys, I really appreciate it. Thanks for that link Neil, I had seen the other two pages but didn't know about the available pictures of the lines.

We will probably end up at Mt Macedon. We are going on the Monday, so I guess there won't be as much trouble getting onto the better lines.

Keep in mind that half of Melbourne takes Monday and Tuesday off for a four day weekend.

Keep in mind that Victorians are lazy Mexicans and don't get out of bed till 11. If you at
the crag by 9 you won't have any problems.

Thanks for the help guys. We had an awesome time out at Camel's Hump on Monday. The weather was fine and we were the only group there, so it was pretty much perfect.

I put my friends on Wee Ripper which they ruined themselves on. I did Boogie till you puke which is well deserving of three stars. Missed the onsight, it's tough for the grade in my opinion. Was hoping to hop on some of the harder stuff but my friends couldn't lift their arms to belay. Will definitely go back, maybe during xmas.

Interesting point regarding what is 'comfortable' vs grades.☺
Ones 'head space' on the day can affect.
Change of rock type (medium) can affect.
Weather conditions can affect.
Change of climbing style/technique required can affect.
... ~> and being sandbagged, or encouraged, by a mate can affect!

I also said 'up to', meaning they are my maximum grades. So I don't think it's so unbelievable that I miss an onsight of a tough 21 somewhere I have never climbed before.
