Hi all,
Can anyone give me advice please. I'm wanting to buy a BD double portaledge (or other good brand) and fly but the shops and online I've tried don't answer or don't supply them or have a wait time of many weeks.
Ideas anyone about a reputable seller and what's best? I need a double...
Cheers,
Shane

Hey mate,

Shoot me your email address and i can check with our BD supplier on Monday if you are still looking then.

I use a BD double and have had no issues with it on my trips.

Cheers

I have the BD double ledge with the deluxe fly, the fly is a bit of a pain to install, if i was doing it again i would get the simple fly. No complaints about the ledge though. Talk to Steve at Rock Hardware, he sold me mine.

Get a metolius, much lighter, easier to set up and more bombproof.

Or get an australian made Big Red one, lighter still than the metolius and just as good IMO.

Generally most people steer away from BD wall gear

This is news to me...
Why do you think this is the case?
(I am guessing it is cost price related).

As an aside based on what I know of your extensive aiding exploits, I suspect it likely that perhaps 50% of your aid rack for specialised gear is likely Black Diamond brand??

Hmm.
I will offer an alternative viewpoint.
I bought a single ledge (BD brand), due I wanted flexibility for my longer term aid climbing aspirations which included soloing, and for which every gram of weight counts!
The climbs I have done with partners where a portaledge was required, they made do with home made arrangements, as they were not in for the long term as I was/still am (& still includes soloing)...
The combined weight of two singles isn't much more than a double and gives more options for setups in my opinion.

The BD model I have is before they went to overseas manufacturers and has a crossed end-brace system that is super easy to deploy and very sturdy. It works well so I am baffled that they went away from that design when they decided to cheapen their manufacturing process...
When I bought it I had to wait a while for delivery but got it through Paddy Pallin who at that time were the only Black Diamond outlet.
I was unable to source a fly for it at the same time, and eventually obtained one from an England supplier. I have seldom used the fly as in reality most of my climbing trips have targeted fine weather...

In my opinion flys for portaledges are probably more the domain of extended expeditions to areas where bad weather can be the difference between success and failure for the climb involved.
Even though I have a fly I consider it heavy, and for most Australian conditions where I think the weather may be iffy I take good quality wet weather gear anyway, and would opt to sleep in it or a goretex bivvy bag...
Did I mention wall climbing necessarily involves suffering?
Heh, heh, heh.

If your ambitions only extend to (say) Ozymandias and Passport To Insanity, I think you'd be better off going lightweight.

Post edit:

Oh i guess i meant the big wall soft goods; ledges, haul bags, belay seats etc . Generally that type of stuff is poorly designed and doesnt last as long as other brands. Your totally right about their protection, the pitons are great. If you dont have any birdbeaks/peckers your wall racks not complete!!
