I know it ridiculous how stupid and blatantly mislead people can be, he is also quoted saying this, ''it is up to the state to sort it out, but this [the new rules] will be to the detriment of ecosystems because grazing is a key tool to reducing fuel loads''.

That makes sense eh? (Tongue firmly in cheek), as the majority of bushfire fuel load is leaf litter and dead wood, but cattle eat grass,... as well as do other good things for parks like stomp on frog habitat, and cause erosion on stream banks...

The 'state' did sort it out! ~> they got their election win by the bribe of allowing the further 'study' to onside that % of votes, ... now it is up to the Federal Govt to sort the mess.

If Vic govt is half serious, then they will take this escape clause to get cattle out of Nat. Parks and at the same time, manage to save a degree of 'face'.

I guess in one sense he's right though, if the cattle get up there and completely f--- everything nothing will grow and therefore nothing will burn.

Looks like Burke has missed a trick here:

Probably need a password, so here's an excerpt:

A new EPBC Act regulation lays the foundations for halting Victoria's Alpine grazing 'trials', but a letter from Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke obtained by CE Daily shows that's a major backdown on his original plan to strengthen protection for all Australia's national parks.

The regulation, gazetted yesterday, makes it clear that Federal EPBC approval is required for stock-grazing in the "Australian Alps National Parks and Reserves" – paving the way for Canberra to block the widely-criticised activity.

But a letter from Burke, sent to his state and territory counterparts in July, shows the minister originally planned broader protections for all national parks and other high biodiversity areas within the National Reserve System.

"The regulation would require anyone undertaking mining, forestry, grazing or significant clearing in these areas to refer that action to me for assessment under the EPBC Act," Burke's July letter says.

The letter goes on to spell out that this would encompass all National Reserve System areas classified under the IUCN system as national parks, strict nature reserves or wilderness areas, unless it is clear that there are specific existing statutory controls that properly protect biodiversity in these areas.
----------------------------

This is a problem because of that nature reserve in.... Qld I think it is? A private philanthropist set aside land as a nature reserve. Now a coal company wants to dig it up, and it looks like they can. Burke had the opportunity to fix this and failed. I have words for this.

What is it with odd arguments from politicians? How about logging protects koalas?

Yeh, and if you drain all the water out of a lake/river/dam it will protect the fish?

Maybe we should suck out all the air from Parliament buildings to test/prove Robyn Parker's hypothesis?

Probably need a login though, so text copied below.

Burke vetoes Victoria's alpine grazing trial
Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke today formally refused EPBC approval for cattle grazing in Victoria's alpine national parks and reserves, on the basis that it would have "unacceptable impacts".

The Victorian Government last December sought EPBC Act approval for a trial involving grazing by up to 400 cattle for up to five months a year, after the Federal Government gazetted regulations requiring EPBC referral of the proposal (see related article).

"The assessment has shown there is irrefutable evidence that cattle grazing would damage the sensitive natural environment, disturb the remote and wild character of the area, detract from aesthetic values, and erode its heritage values," Burke said.

Here's a pdf of the Statement of Reasons from Dept of Environment

In todays weekly times the say that sheep are to reintroduced into the terrick terrick (near mt hope ) park as the excessive grass is hindering rather than helping the Plains Wander a bird that was one of the main reasons for the park to help preseve its habitat , certainly no problems there with sheep ruining springs and water courses

There's at least 1 petition about it if you're not feeling as disillusioned as I am with the enormous no. of petitions about social and environmental issues that are being ignored.

Yeah, the minister involved agreed to the 'prescribed' meeting prior to any change in outcome...
☺☺☺ ~> heh, heh, heh, ☺ ~> I don't like the chances of the Cattlemans Association on the outcome.

Im a contentious person. I know that. Noone could tell me anything, but concentrate on the bad pests such as pigs goats and dogs- keep them out in addition to local engineered bush fire hazard reduction and the rest will fall into place.
Get the greenies in there pullin up blckberries. Create a space for morons with boats...Na its all lost. University regulatory systems have pretty much boned everything and everyone. Dam then universites.

By the way I got me continuation to 40 days walking thro the wilderness (ref grid boltin at windjammer) coming up. Im on probation here so I thinkn I might send it to cragx on a few days. Im out in the stiks, no reception etc, cant be fd chargin me phone and walking up this hill so look forward to that. Beware tho it contains adult themes, reveals where Jesus will desend on to earth and is twice as long. It will be titled 100 donars needed.
Now, where was we?

Angel did come an sed to me I have a new angle on the 40 day thing. Tell you what, build me a boat down by the shore of the mighty Shoalhaven and I will fill it with morons, bogans, an boners, then sail them past Comerong out to sea, but like rabbits in the blckberries, a couple were left out an look at the place now.
Reception is what you get if you put in the effort to receive.
Radiata pines at many locations are good receivers. You know that already, but sometimes they just get old and tired of being criticised. Blame the unis for that, next 10 years another study will vomit out of the mouth of the beast and say how good pines are, but we will be negligent if we allow them to be removed on todays thinking.
Exchange rate is 100 donars to 37 dinars, but a bag of gold won't buy you a loaf of bread at the Nati pub, so maybe should have painted the boat pink and all would've been well, except Nati Lake like fingernail polish dried out while the uni was writing a report, so the Shoalhaven it was.
