I was at the howqua bindaree hut area saturday and there where 8 cars parked at the camp area where the bridge is washed out (looks like for many years) at the foot of Helicopter spur . Presumable they were walking as either start of howitt spur, helicopter spur or road to bluff hut all giving nice weekend walks or long day walks . Bluff hut spur road had its closed sign pushed over and had been driven over there was a more detailed road closed notice on a star picket beside the road . It appeared a large number of vechiles were going to that "iconic old " craigs hut . there were some very large washout areas on the circuit road that had been repaired but it was closed after the Monument turnoff .
If I were the catleman putting cattle out in the park I would be worried about them dying from acute lead poisoning as there are quite radical people opposed to grazing . In the Barmah Forest it was fairly common for carcasses being found minus their hind quarters . 20 minutes with a trailer and hoist and 2 people would have the legs in the trailer and be off

hi all
if people are concerned about the re-introduction of grazing its really important that you tell the government.

Its early days for the Coalition, if people don't tell them its a bad idea, they will claim a mandate to continue.

There is an action alert, with email addresses for key people here:
http://themountainjournal.wordpress.com/2011/01/10/alpine-grazing-action-alert/
thanks!

Wouldn't those be people simply stealing meat, rather than anyone with any kind of political motivation?

Thanks, thats a wonderful 'scarey greenies have guns and chainsaws and are roaming the hills dismembering cows' conspiracy theory.

Just as an aside to the original post, I once stumbled across some 4Wders cutting up a cow near Mt Lovick, i can assure you they weren't 'greenies', and they were also pretty damn scarey when they realised i was alone and i'd seen what they were doing...

Have you seen the movie Deliverance?

It was actually a bit of a 'deliverance' moment. Almost dark, 3 really drunk blokes with a gun, a spotlight and very big knives. Me, a young hippie looking guy with a backpack. "Me, no i'm not a greenie, why do you ask?" ...

The Royal National Park just south of Synny used to have a problem with deer, until the NPWS embarked on a cull.

I used to get the occasional chunk of venison from the shackies at Era.

Just sayin....

What about the feral bikers out on tracks which are clearly marked NO BIKES

But that's because the next day, someone will pay some other guy in a lab coat to come out with a 'scientific' study concluding the opposite viewpoint.

Stop alpine grazing – it’s a park not a paddock!

Stop alpine grazing –
it’s a park not a paddock!

WHY: The Baillieu Government has reintroduced grazing to Victoria’s
Alpine National Park under the guise of a flawed science project.

Cattle were banned from the park in 2005, now they are back – damaging
threatened species, trampling wetlands and spreading weeds.

While this may benefit a few cattlemen it comes at great cost to Victoria’s
natural heritage. National parks are for nature, not cattle.

SPEAKERS: Environment groups, scientists, politicians and others. Watch
our website for regular updates – www.vnpa.org.au.

WHEN: Wednesday, April 6, 2011. Doors open 6.30pm, for a 7pm start.

WHERE: Box Hill Town Hall, in the main hall, 1022 Whitehorse Rd, Box
Hill. Melway Reference: Map 47 E9. The town hall is a six minute walk from
Box Hill Station (Lilydale and Belgrave lines) or a three minute walk from
the last tram stop on Route 109.

BRING: Feel free to bring your waterproof jacket and bushwalking gear
to show your support for national parks.

COST: Free. Donations welcome.

MORE INFO: To learn more about alpine cattle grazing visit
www.vnpa.org.au, phone us on 03 9347 5188, or email vnpa@vnpa.org.au.

Organised by the National Parks Association.

Supported by Friends of the Earth, The Wilderness Society, Environment Victoria and The National Trust.

Another thing you might consider doing is commenting on this guy's ill-informed blog post.

Not really. But once I get home I'm going to plus one him.

This was wrong on so many levels. Hopefully the federal government decision, has put this to bed.

Still can't believe that MCAV are STILL going with the "Grazing reduces Blazing" argument... Haven't they been proven wrong to many times?

Sometimes you just can't fix stupid.
(Sometimes, there's the luck of the Darwin awards, though)

Mark Coleman, president of the MCAV has a letter in the Age complaining of the lack of balance in The Age's coverage. Bare-faced gall. That mob have got so much positive coverage (romantic man-from-snowy-river stuff) and much of their "side" of the argument is just to abuse the scientists working in the area.
