The amount of “For Sale” Threads on Chockstone ...

Instead of having the same old half dozen users banging away, hopefully this will reveal the views of the silent majority. Please vote!

I have picked up a few good bargians being sold on chockstone over the last couple of years, I have no problem with for sale threads (I mean we do have a for sale section in the forum). But I cant stand retail spam.

As long as it's restricted to the 'For Sale' subforum, and from an actual human being not a spambot/company, I don't really care. I'd prefer If its users with history but if people want to get entrepeneurial, well, I don't have too much against it.

If the mods/admins feel its straining on their time and resources, or against the spirit of the website, then for sure they should start restricting it.

I'd rather have the opportunity to buy something from someone on Chocky than from someone on Ebay.

Speaking on behalf of the mods of Chockstone... it's way too hard to police the for sale threads by limiting them to users who post, or some such system. Providing it isn't a blatant grab for cash (a real business for example) then we are happy for it to continue how it is. Having to individually investigate each and every for sale item would be laborious. We do however delete a lot of spam - and it usually happens so quickly people don't notice us doing it. In recent weeks I have sent warning emails to a few people who seem to use our forums as their own personal clearance store front. They all replied that they understood our position and would limit the amount of posts in the future.

I'd rather have the opportunity to pick up a bargain than not. It's pretty easy to ignore threads I'm not interested in following.

But then certain people who do run a business that is climbing oriented do use this site to sell, or at least advertise their wears.

Why not just have the one Stuff for Sale Thread, so then it's just one line on the front page, and if your interested you can look at it, and if it's in its own thread then the mods delete the thread without investigating it too much.

Please contact me direct if you have some info I may not be aware of.

It would be way too confusing for people to ask questions if it was all combined into one thread.

I'd be happy for the for sale section posts not to be displayed on the list of latest posts o the front page.
Not being Victorian, I come in by the front page as it gives me an easy index to the newest posts to go check the ones I am interested in.
A lot of the threads on here have no meaning to me so I generally skip them, and that is easiest to by coming in the front page.

It's just continually annoying to see the half of the new unread posts on the front page as 'buy my crap'.
Looks more like a ebay than chocky.

I'm happy that there is a for sale section, just not on the front page with continual 'offers' from the same old people all the time.

Maybe I should come in by the forum front page, but then I have to trawl through each content category and it just takes a lot more time.

It doesn't bother me the amount of times I see a genuine climber sell items they no longer use, there just isn't that many of them anyways.
It's just the continual bombardment of crap that has appeared lately.
And only then because it is on the front page and therefore takes up to half of the new posts presented to me.

How about splitting the 'for sale' in two.
'Genuine second hand not needed stuff' and 'profit seeking morons'.
The morons don't appear on the updated post lists on the front page.

Then they could use the PM facility to negotiate

The whole point of a public question/answer is that the question only needs to be asked and answered once!

I think removing for sale items from the front page would be a good idea. I'll see if Mike can make that happen... stay tuned.

Don't you know anything Neil? Now you've posted that, if it takes longer than 3 days or doesn't happen there will be constant bitching. Much better to leave it as a surprise.

That's a pain for those of us that do read the for sale threads, also using the front page.

Maybe it needs to be a user option like hiding of email addresses in user profiles?

I think it comes down to what it is you want to present Chocky to the rest of the world as.
A climbing related site, or a clearing ebay type site?

Well, if the for sale posts are removed from the front page, there needs to be another page with all the recent posts on it.

I'd like to be able to see more than is listed on the front page anyway a lot of the time.

Im not sure if its helpful but another forum I am on (non-climbing) remove posts that dont conform to certain rules.. I think they are specific information in the heading e.g. "Item - Location - Condition - Price"

And then certain more criteria.

Not sayings its good or bad, it would certainly be more work for the admin, but Im just putting it out there as something going on elsewhere.

personally I have no issues with any of it so far except that I personally would prefer the For Sale section to be purely for items being sold and thats it.. just makes it easier to find things I think.

For a trial period (starting now) the 'For Sale' items will no longer be displayed on the front page of Chockstone. It certainly makes for a much more inviting front page - looks like a real forum now!

As I type this around 75% of Chockstoners that have voted are happy with the amount of for sale notices and wouldn't mind more.. so your 'trial' makes complete sense Neil?!
