It was the poor writing and lazy argument, not to mention the sheer ironic fact that she spent time writing and thinking about something that she is apparently not interested in, that were clear to me.

But why is anybody interested in anything really (except fishing of course)

Random post trying to post as CHockstone thinks what I want to post is invalid or suspicious

Part 1 of what I actually want to post: What I think is actually interesting about this, is the moment a non conventional sport gets highlighted, someone wants to say, why is this inspirational and they are just selfish testosterone filled boys. Really, I don't give a fûck about football, but it gets worshipped incessantly. Tennis anyone? Goddam golf? Surely winning a grand final or a tournament is just another thing on someone's bucket list in the same way? Winning an oscar? An olympic medal? A booker prize? A phd even ... These things have all been couched as inspiring before too.

The other thing that gets me is the assumption that it is just men out there doing these sort of "selfish" and "pointless" things. Clearly, she hasn't done any research into it, but it just continues the assumptions that women are not out there, when they are both being very bloody good and actually, you know, quite like it.

In the meanwhile she is concerned about controlling her frizzy hair. Well, I call that selfish nonsense that is a complete waste of time too, and it perpetuates the idea women just do appearance orientated things (women win Miss Universe, or star on Paris catwalks or some other thing that I would personally call completely uninspiring but I've heard people say otherwise).

From a female academic who has obviously put a good deal of her own energy into succeding in a male dominated word (that other people might strangely enough also find uninspiring), that is particularly disappointing.

Sorry for the gazillion posts. I eventually worked out that the word "c_rsory" is terribly upsetting to chockstone, but it took me all that dividing it up to work out what it was objecting to.

I'd like the opportunity to hang shit on the irrelevance of her thesis topic.

Wow that's an appalling excuse for an opinion piece isn't it?

I genuinely pity anyone who can't sit back for a moment in life and appreciate nature/the world we live in. Her loss really.

My Dad and I were just talking about soccer - which I love as a sport to play, and I watch the world cup....
"So Lionel Messi is french?"
"Argentinian"
"Sounds French.."

"Cristiano Ronaldo is about the best in the league"
"And he's from Brazil?"
"Portugal"

"When's the UEFA cup then?"
"February"
"What every year?"
"So is that country vs country or the big teams?"
"It's complicated"

And for the most part are deemed possible by the people that follow it, if not inevitable in the case of there being a winner to a tournament or an oscar.

I think that's what made freeing the Dawn Wall special: it wasn't necessarily going to be possible when they started. Even other very good climbers (Sharma, Honnold, etc) said they had doubts or it was beyond them. These two have done something that was considered at least improbable...

Oh no look what they've inspired - people climbing in glow orange socks!

Otherwise this article is a good summary of the whole event & history.

A silly comparison. There is a version of climbing which is directly comparable to normal sports, it's called a climbing comp. You show up on the day, give it your shot, whoever is best on the day wins...........that's how 99% of "normal sports" work. Epic multi-year sieges on hard routes are best compared to other pursuits. I won't give you my full rant, because it'll sound mean.

Absolutely. It required a whole lot of shit to come together, and I'm pretty surprised that they pulled it off.

It'd sound really dumb because that was my point. I was highlighting that difference in the list of events Wendy supplied.

If I was thinking of stuff that I think aligned with dawn wall it would be things like those guys kayaking to New Zealand or something. Seems unlikely and (to outsiders) pointless and dangerous.

I imagine Usain Bolt declaring to the world that he's going to run 10k's in under 16:40. Everyone would call bullshit. Then he breaks it up into 100m sections and stops the clock at the end of each one. If he runs a slow one, he gets to go back and do it again. When he's had enough for the day, he sets up a tent and has some mates bring him dinner.

New world record for running 10 kilometers, yay!

How does your mind work? One minute you're surprised they achieved their goal, the next you're hanging shit on them?
