Kayaking to NZ is pointless and dangerous. Playing football is also pointless and dangerous. Climbing the Dawn Wall on the other hand is merely pointless:) I am happy to indulge in pointless activity myself.

This is absolutely mind-boggling! It reeks of someone who has nothing to say but desperately needs some attention to remind people that she exists. Because talking bollocks is all she seems to have contributed to planet earth so far.

Hell, I actually got stupider reading that.

Because their goal teeters between awesome and dumb. Big, long, massively hard epic route - awesome. Spending 7 years dogging the shit out of something, falling off a million times, getting all o.c.d. about skin management, stage managed publicity........these things live down the dumb end of the climbing street.

I think it's monumental. What you see as dumb, they see as pedantic and necessary to complete something epic and historic.

You see a bit of silliness in it at some level though, right?

I see what you're saying, however I don't think its any different from Usain Bolt training to run a 9 second race, or Tony Hawk training to pull a 900 kicker. The only difference I think, is these dudes get to be totally badass and sleep in a portaledge 600 meters off of the deck for 3 weeks instead of going home when they're knackered.

Fair call.
I guess the whole thing lays outside the realm of "normal climbing", at any level... They were applying siege tactics to a big wall project with a camera crew and social media campaign..
Hardly "purist" in the Royal Robbins sense...

That said, hats off to em - see of they get on sixty minutes?

All that effort and it only gets 2 stars.

Except when you accidentally dislodge a haul bag and end up with a rib separated from your sternum...

Cut her some slack, Botoxbox, she's an academic, so no doubt is struggling with the concept of having to work for a living. I recon she could write a cracking article on drinking chardonnay and smoking cigarettes.

Footage of some of the climbing on pitch 15 to further fan the fires of discussion here.

Like many big climbing achievements, future climbers will come back to this route and do it in better style with no porters, less social media wanking, leading all pitches free instead of team-free, etc. However I still give these guys heaps of respect for finishing a huge project and dealing with the demands of sponsorship and media with a modicum of grace.

And "normal" climbing isn't silly? Caldwell and Jorgensen were just carrying silliness to a level that garnered public attention. I could almost see Harding's ghost hovering over the scene screaming "Yes! Yes! Yes!" (apologies to Molly Bloom).
I really enjoyed the whole thing and got emotionally engaged (will Kevin get pitch 15). Four and a half stars from me.

And sleeping next to a bag of your own feces for 18 days...
