When was younger and skiing full time, <5000 cal and I lost weight. When I was 17 and going hard at dry-land training for skiing 8 to 10k a day and I was still not gaining weight (this involved eating when I wasn't hungry. worst thing ever). In my experience the average daily intake numbers have aways been useless. It is a big bell curve out there. These days I don't keep track.
