For an intermediate rock climber who has a small amount of mountaineering experience (a 6 day course a while ago), fit, and lots of snow camping/XC skiing - does anyone have some feedback on which is the better course between Alpine guides TMC and Aspiring guides West-East Aspiring expedition in NZ?

Thanks for that, Neil..
I had seen this post and noted the comparison between the 'steep alpine ice course' rather than the one I mentioned (West-East etc). The feedback on that post was terrifc, though!
If anyone has done (or has some experience with it) the West-East exp, I would welcome the feedback - thanks,
Kev

alpine courses are like sandwiches.....if you make your own, you always get what you want.

Like most folks have said, both Asiring guides and Alpine guides have great reputations. Most of the guides freelance between different guiding companies and all have the same NZMGA(?) accreditation. Also, like others have said, if you can get a couple of mates interested, then arrange a private course. I did a TMC with Alpine guides several years ago and there was a big range of attitudes/abilities in the group and it would definitely have been better to have folks closer in what they wanted to get out of it. Oh yeah, again like everyone has said, the longer you go for the more chance that you'll get some climbing done. It's common to sit in the hut (or under a bivy rock) for a week or more at a stretch and if you only go for a 7-8 days you might never get out in the hills.
Of course there's another place you could ask this question, on the aussiemountaineers discussion forum, it's itching to see questions like this one...

Thanks Andrew, that's good feedback. Might turn out cheaper too (which means the opportunity for a longer stay).
Cheers,
