I have been asked by some relo's living in the Sunshine Coast what to do about a youngen aged 10 who is interested in climbing. What are the club's/climbing gyms round there like for youngster's who actually want to have a bit of a train? What advice should I give?

Mt Coolum is the local 'gym' for the Sunshine Coast - there is a huge friendly bunch of climbers there every weekend. However 10 years old sound pretty young and i'm not sure if too many people would be willing to take on the responsibility of teaching someone that young - he might need to stack on the kilos so he can belay as well.

Having just been there I am aware of the 'gym' for the Sunshine Coast, something tells me that although it is overgraded it is not really the place for a beginner or a 10 year old. A real gym might be more accomodating

I wouldn't write Coolum off if its the only local option - Sister Matt and young Ollie basically learned to climb there, in their early teens. The local regulars really took them under their wing, can't see why it wouldn't be the same for your friend. its a great scene, I've never been anywhere where everyone is so supportive of all abilities, or so psyched when a bumbly ticks "the warm up" after 100 shots. The short walk means Mum can cruise up and supervise.

I hear some of the Sunny locals have good home walls but you need to know the right people...

You'll probably get more replies on Qurank

PS: re overgrading ... for the record I have done four 26s and a 27 at Taipan (which supposedly has solid grades), each in fewer shots than it took me to get one "overgraded" Coolum 26. swings and roundabouts...

yep, have to agree, have done world party and Mr J on Taipan and thought them par for the course when compared with Coolum.

Send him up to Crookneck. That will sort him out. If he still wants to climb after that, then look out!
