Even that seems to have been eliminated from most these days.

I checked my health insurance and this is correct, I'm NOT covered for to quote: "mountaineering or rock climbing using ropes or climbing equipment"

So free solo, without rock / climbing shoes is covered by that definition. I suppose they have to say that because with equipment is showing intent, otherwise it could just be poor judgement ...

Did you mean travel insurance or health insurance?

So do any of the many people climbing in Thailand have insurance cover?

I've got it on good authority that IHI are very reputable. I've been insured with them on a few trips now - never had to make a claim thank god.

Does anyone know anyone who's had to claim from IHI, esp. the fly you home medical cover?

That's the acid test, isn't it? I've previously gone through Insure4Less and they at least seem to know the intelligent questions to be asking to define level of risk, but I've never actually tried to put in a claim.

If anyone has tried to claim through any company for an overseas climbing accident I'd like to hear about it (especially as I'm hoping to get back to Yosemite later this year).

Matt Pascoe broke both his heels in Spain a few years back and got airlifted back to Australia very quickly. I'll try and find out what insurance it was through...

I had a friend break a leg snow boarding and had no dramas with his BMC insurance. He was living in England at the time, BMC won't cover non residents.

I have claimed from IHI for overnight treatment at the Himalayan Rescue 'hospital' at EBC Nepal side in 2008. Admittedly my claim was small (roughly $500) but it took IHI about a week to put the money back on to my Visa card.

Thought this was interesting...

Have booked travel insurance through insure4less in the past, and naturally went to them again for my upcoming euro trip... Filled out their questionaire which asks about dates, locations and grades you climb.

I got this reply:
blah blah blah standard speel stuff, then this...
"Please note the Standard/Alpine plan covers up to Grade 28 Australian."

Seems very odd that if you are a more experianced/stronger climber, you won't be covered for any hard routes...

I went with that idea to Italy (reciprocal ageement for health) and when our bags didn't show up on the carousel in Milan I really began to shit myself. Travel insurance covers more than just broken bones. Also club membership in many euro countries covers for rescue insurance. They kinda assume you have insurance and if in any doubt send in the cavalry for you. They'll expect after the rescue, that may of been unwanted, that you give insurance details or cash up. I witnessed some poms who fortunately had BMC insurance quickly deal with this after a CAI rescue.

a recent email from insure4less:

"We have been in negotiations with our underwriters over the past few weeks as they have been experiencing some significant losses from our alpine plan to the US / Canada. You are probably aware that hospital costs are much higher in the US than anywhere else in the World. Unfortunately they have concluded that they are not able to get the premium level required to avoid making further losses and have therefore withdrawn from this market.

We are not aware of any other companies that do provide this cover but you could try www.needabroker.com.au to see if there are any Australian brokers that can assist."

Any ideas on alternatives?

That's a bummer, but it would be interesting to know more about that development. It underlines the problems with climbing and expedition insurance.

A similar thing happened with insurance for polar expeditions some years ago. The pool of climbing-specific policies is relatively small, by worldwide insurance standards. With climbing and expeditions being inherently risky, a higher rate of claims stands out on the books as financially unviable compared to their regular business.

Expedition insurance went from wildly expensive 20 years ago, to really quite cheap 10 years ago, to almost impossible to get at the current moment. Hopefully it can settle somewhere in the middle where it remains viable for both sides.

I believe Bupa Global (used to be called ihi Bupa) still cover climbing anywhere in the world. The cost is pretty astronomical however!
