2020 Olympics = Sports Climbing

Looks like it is happening;

I think it is a positive thing, but recognise there will definitely be some haters out there! Perhaps a good
reason to keep some crags 'secret'!

I thought I'd followed the wrong link for a second there... Twenty20 cricket in the Olympics too? Power boating?

Sport Climbing is neither

"If we are going to have cricket and tennis and golf and soccer in the Olympics, we may as well have tiddlywinks and darts and dominoes"
Geoff Boycott
and if it's climbing it won't be rock climbing will it? No, plastic pulling would be a more apt description. Free solo onsight in a slate quarry that's a sport worth seeing, more death than the luge.

Poor taste Zebedee. However, I think if they add sport climbing then its only fair to add bolt chopping.

And if they want a sport which is fun for the participant but slow and boreing to watch for everyone else (like golf or knitting) then aid climbing could become an olympic sport.

Since when was aid climbing fun for the participant?

All the pieces are falling into place. I'll be 43 in 2020. If I time my run from now I should be in perfect shape for the games by then. Hoping to onsight maybe a couple of 22s in the lead up.

I've previously thought that sports where the Olympics is not the pinnacle of achievement probably shouldn't be in the games. So Rugby, cricket, tennis and golf are all out. Stupid sports, that people only care about once every 4 years like swimming and field events are in. Not sure if climbing counts then. There might be people out there who climb purely for the recognition of others? I'd be a lot more interested if it was an onsight-trad competition.

Depends largely on your definition of fun. There is no accounting for some peoples perversions....

Then space docking should be in the Olympics.

I like the concept of the Olympics being sports of a tradition of training for war. Fencing, shooting fighting, hammer throwing.

and if things like 'walking' can be consdiered olympic worthy (which isnt much in my mind) then surely you could have golf. it is the same thing except you also have to hit the ball.

bring on the lawn bowls i say!

Drinking competitions.

Sacking.

Looting.

Enjoying spoils of war.

Dawn Fraser was a champion.

Bouldering would be like the "walking race", people wondering why it is in the olympics.

If climbing makes the 2020 olympics then maybe they could hold the olympics in Natimuk. If it rains between now and then maybe we could hold the swimming in Lake Natimuk, maybe the diving off the jetty?

which it is...gymnastics on plastics

At least bouldering comps are fun to watch, if not just for the crater value. Sport climbing difficulty comps are a big yawn. In the finals, usually most competitors fall at the crux, a few get past it and the winner is normally the one who slaps just a bit higher than the rest.
