I applaud the crag.com guys for putting together a much more palatable licensing model. And also Brendan for working towards a standardised API. Progressive steps.

It will be quite a challenge. Data quality is everything and finding a standard that doesn't require re engineering of existing solutions will be extremely tough. Agreeing on a security model should also be a key priority - perhaps openID might be the way to get user portability/interop.

That said, I do think sharing data is the right way forward.
I'm unable to spend any time developing these days, but I'll happily support the initiative from an ACA point of view.

brendan,
That's great to hear, let me know if there is anything I can do, particularly interested in building apps that interface with ACA.

I note with concern that thecrag.com is now listing routes in climbing and bouldering gyms. Indoor ticks appear in Recent Ascents and personal stats and (I assume) the higher level stats. This has the potential to corrupt what has been a terrific resource for rockclimbing. I want to read what people think of Auto, Downwind or Serpentine, not the new green 16 in the corner. An online gym record has its place - could thecrag.com be divided into rock and plastic?

When they introduced that feature (at the request of the OCD types who track their indoor mileage (not looking at you Andrew Clark and you know who you are) they were thinking of finding a way of making sure the indoor ticks didn't polute / affect your outdoor stats. Not sure if they got around to that.

It's much easier than it used to be.

Indoor kms this year: 0
Indoor kms last year: 0

:-)

I do sometimes miss the ease of structuring training in the gym though.
