I don't, but even if I did I probably wouldn't remember where I'd put the list.

And anyway, such a list would just jeopardise my chance to claim the Alzheimers Tick, which is where you climb a route you've done before but now don't remember.

Apparently they've added topo functionality to thecrag: http://www.thecrag.com/11764759/topo

I dont like change :)

Actually looking okay,...but Id rather see a list a "recent ascents"..not "selected ascents" TBH..which the old thecrag.com was good for...or am I missing a way of viewing this on the new one?

Wow, that new stylesheet is even less space-efficient than the last one.

The new interface is indeed very pretty and a massive improvement.

So who is going to enter the descriptions for the tens of thousands of routes in the database? Actually - who is going to spend the time fixing the current mess in this database!

But its not a complete listing of route descriptions - just names and grades! Not exactly useful for anyone actually wanting to use it as a guidebook. To make it useful someone needs to clean it all up - rearrange the nonsensical locations of many crags and remove a lot of the shit people have added - then start adding route descriptions in full. These sort of online guidebooks don't work if everyone just adds their own 2cents bit by bit. That just adds up to a confusing mess.

Can anyone point me towards a full guide that's been made using it?

Reading their Acceptable Use and Copyright pages thecrag is one of the most draconian in this regard.

"None of the content and/or information may be reverse-engineered, modified, reproduced, republished, translated into any other language or computer language, re-transmitted in any form or by any means, resold or redistributed without the prior written consent of thecrag.com. You may not make, sell, offer for sale, modify, reproduce, display, publicly perform, import, distribute, retransmit or otherwise use the content in any way, unless expressly permitted to do so by thecrag.com."

The ACA Route Database, on the other hand, seems to be one of the most 'sharey' - licenced under the Creative Commons Share-Alike policy. The CC-SA allows you to copy, distribute and transmit the work, and to adapt the work as long as you attribute the authors and share your derivation under the same terms.

One of the problems is that thecrag.com is a private (possibly commercial?) entity whilst climb.org.au is part of the Australian Climbing Association run as a non-profit. So there could be some conflicts there.

The BIG problem with thecrag.com is that it has been online for 10+ years - so the database is massive, with thousands of peoples ticks and routes. So you can't just delete it all and start afresh. Instead you have to battle with editing and moving what already exists - which in many instances is very flawed. Common problems are people adding in new routes but not knowing the name of the new route, or people adding routes to the wrong area so there is duplicates. Each of these routes will have ticks associated with them from users. It all gets very messy!

Yeah the copyright page is a bit rich claiming exclusive ownership of all the info given most of it is lifted from other sources.

Eg there is quite a lot of routes straight from thesarvo.com - which has the same Creative Commons share alike licence as the ACA which actually says:

You are free:
to Share — to copy, distribute and transmit the work
to Remix — to adapt the work
Under the following conditions:
Attribution — You must attribute this work (with link).
Share Alike — If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one.

I dont think thecrag meets either of the conditions.

I really like the crag but have never really taken to climb.org so hopefully the latest additions to the crag make it more guide like although there is heaps of work required as neil mentioned. I used it to create a topo and guide of a wall we developed in the coffs area which looks ok online but i dont think they have released the crag guide version yet.

In defence if thecrag though most of the info was published with agreements from guidebook publishers as lists only to protect the guidebook publishers copyright...I think you will find that is were their copyright comes from. Pretty much intially all the info thecrag came directly from mass listings from these publishers were ACA and the savo have been public/open sourced information entered....only later has the it been fleshed out with other listings from users.
