sydney vs melbourne debate with a few random locations thrown in for good measure.
i'll just add my 2 more cents worth and go for Melb over Sydney, but I believe the OP was asking about great community, sustainable living and all that. I kinda don't think either offers that. you really have to go to the sticks for that "community" feeling. where people smile back at you and don't look like you're a silly tourist or a freak!
Rick, I was actually discussing that the other day- maybe for the next long weekend! I'll be calling you well in advance
and heck, we're biased!!

To mix all that up in the melting pot would have to be Katoomba or surrounds, can't really think of anywhere else in Oz that has that mix of lifestyle...maybe somewhere in Tasmania or possibly around Halls Gap?

Dude. The Shire is the only spot worth talking about. End of Topic
Less than 2 hours drive to Blueys and Nowra.
Heaps of local climbing and bouldering.
Unlimited beaches, and next to the Royal NP...

Mount Druitt by the sea isn't my idea of a good place to live.
Then again, I live in Goulburn, so maybe I should shut up.
