I think I would live somewhere in the Woolongong area. Around Kiama maybe.
It is close to Sydney. Not too far to the Blueys. Easy to get to Nowra and Point Perp. It has a good range of weather conditions. It has nice beaches and you can go fishing.
And it has he The Big K!

Except climbers...

yeah, i'd back Kiama/ Gerringong / the coast south of Sydney in general
or if you're willing to go a little bit more south, then Vincentia, for that is where my perfect place is. a little less convenient for the climbing, but great views of Point Perpendicular. ahh... and plenty of bushland, gorgeous beaches, tracks and tracks to run/ bike on, close to Nowra crags... if only I could go back...
Brisbane is pretty cool (not temperature wise though). I'm still discovering the climbing around there, but Glasshouse Mountains seem pretty good, and within a short drive. the town is nice enough, pity it's full of queenslanders ;)

I didn't mention Albury as the best place to live for everybody, just tried to give an idea of why it's the best place for ME to live.

Have you considered New Zealand? Without being obvious, there is the Southern Alps and if that doesn't do it for you, then there are the f*ckin' Darrans! I don't think anything else has to be said.

Yeah if it doesn't have to be Oz then NZ is a great choice. Some great cities and towns close to or right in the guts of diverse mtn environs. Same with tassie (which had been mentioned gremlin but it appears you've had too many mushrooms:))

Rain, rain, rain, rain ....
Depends really on if you're more into rock or mountains. Oz has no mountains. NZ has no rock (it has weetbix).
Allright, it has a few bits of rock, but really, the rock in NZ bears no comparison to the range and quality in Oz. Great walking though and the mountains are spectacular.
Bec is also a trainee instructor so I figure she'll be influenced by work options as well. South coast of NSW doesn't have a lot of work options. And really, Nowra isn't that great ... would you seriously base your choice of location on proximity to Nowra??? The south coast is nice with beautiful weather but the climbing is nothing to write home about.
NZ - well you'd want to be a mountain guide (not for me!)
Brisbane - probably no worse than Adelaide. Frog is the bomb and it seems like there's been plenty of sport development. Might nearly kill a UK immigrant in the first summer though.

I would, especially with the Sydney Festival on at the moment. For all it's charms, Melbourne isn't the most convenient of places to be a climber. Plus, being in Melbourne in Summer is like living in an armpit.

have car, will travel :) as much as i love melbourne, i must say, the summers here are a little foul, especially when you find yourself on an un-airconditioned old tram packed to the gills with unwashed students all with arms in the air holding on for dear life so they dont touch any other sweating commuter. poooh.
rock climbing aside, melbourne has more culture than sydney tho, and its cheaper to live here.

In the last 2 weeks I've seen Gilles Peterson play a free gig, Jamie Lidell, and Mr Scruff twice (and it could have been three times). If I'd been in Melbourne, I wouldn't have gotten any of this. Sure, it's unusual (and mainly because of the Festival), but Sydney is hardly a cultural wasteland. Add the beaches and climbing, and Sydney is pretty damn good. It's easy to bitch about Sydney-siders (and believe me, I do), but Sydney certainly doesn't suck.

I totally agree (ex Melbourninte now living in Sydney). Would you believe an underground carpark in CBD Sydney is $36 an hour?

No you wouldn't, but any other day of the year, apart from when Sydney dresses itself up and throws on a festival, you wouldn't get it here either. At least in Melbourne you can walk into a pub and watch a live band. They don't have nearly as many pokies either.

And you can't in Sydney? - Are you insane. Sydney has loads of pubs playing live music. Have you not been to the Sando- they've got stuff on pretty much every night, the Bald Faced Stag, and then little bar/venues like the Vanguard. Thats just a few from the Inner West - I'm sure theres more elsewhere. Music is thriving here.

Wrong. Have a look at the free gigs at some of the free gigs at the Beach Road and UTS over the next month or so. People love to say that there's no culture in Sydney, but if you're willing to seek it out there's plenty of good stuff to do. I like Melbourne and I'm not saying it isn't a nice city, but there's plenty to like about Sydney too.

Lifes pretty good out here in the right season, but I can't believe nobody has said Tassie yet!
plenty of bomber rock, great trad, great sport, beautiful sea cliffs, and so many different things to do
when your not climbing.

You are all wrong. Brizvegas is the best place in Oz to live. It has the full range of seasons, from warm
to smegingly humid, and is home to the greatest crag in the universe. And there is no bigger alternative
lifestyle than the one on offer in Kweenzland.
Do you play the banjo?
