"Hot" Henry, the man that changed the style and nature of climbing in Australia when he came out in 1975 is coming in November.
The Victorian Climbing Club is organising a talk and slide show in Melbourne on the 8th Nov.
I'll keep you informed through this thread.
Check out the Arapiles guides Louise Shepherd's and the Selected Climbs for some back ground or do a google on Henry Barber rock climber.
For Sydney, Canberra and Adelaide folk, get in touch with your local clubs to see what they are organising.

Even better listen to a recent interview he did @ podclimber . . .
Edit: They REALLY should try to get John Ewbank out as well/instead . . . .

Awesome - this should be great. The podcast is really pretty good - I also recommend it. We really enjoyed listening to it on the way to Moonarie earlier this year.
I'll be there. Good on ya Tony for organising this!

Any chance Henry is going to make it to Tassie? I'll be more than happy to give him a belay on Savage Journey.

I saw Henry speak in the late 90s at the Patagonia store in the city. He was a very entertaining and occasionally provocative speaker. Great slides too. It will be a great evening people - get along to it!

So does anyone know the full story about the Henry Barber / Rob Taylor Kilimanjaro incident? I tried Googling it without much luck - small reference on Wikipedia but that's about it.

He's gotta come to Queensland. A great deal of history is tied up at Frog with Henry.

I read Rob Taylor's book 'The Breach' about 30 years ago, and still remember it (which is saying something). It was really bitter, like when Paul Keating gets mentioned in Bob Hawke's autobiography.
At the time, I didn't realise it was talking about Henry Barber, as he was given a false name, presumably to keep the lawyers happy It wans't 'till years later that I realised that Harley Baker (?) was Henry Barber. If you're really interested, buy a copy of the book or read the reviews on amazon at
http://www.amazon.com/Breach-Kilimanjaro-Conquest-Self/dp/0963018809/ref=sr_1_1/105-0153160-9891654?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1190707540&sr=8-1
You could always go along to Henry's talk and ask him yourself.
James Mc
PS for those who haven't read Bob Hawke's autobiography.....
Everything good that ever happened in the whole world was because of Bob Hawke.
Everything bad that ever happend in the whole world was because of Paul Keating.

If you are interested in Barber - he has a biography "On Edge: The Life & Climbs of Henry Barber" by Lee, Chip.
Great read!

For those of us that arent VCC members can we come too? PLEASE. How much?
Everytime I look at Pebbles and Bam Bam Im full of respect for the man, not to mention all the other crazy lines that he onsighted with minimal gear.
I must ask just what was it that gave Henry the ability to climb so much harder than just about every other climber in OZ. No disrepect to the local climbers but from what i've learnt he was head and shoulders above them all.

Ummm you probably should have a listen to the the podclimber interview.
In actual fact the local aussie bold approach was what made him step it up further
I think it is around the 8 minute mark from memory
And they really should try to get Ewbank out . . .

Didn't you hear his talk at the Community Hall in Blackheath about four years ago Macca? He also played some gigs in Katoomba with his guitar.

Absolutely! Most of the VCC events are open to all climbers, not just members. That includes the Annual Dinner at the Nati Frinj this year, club meets, you can even come on a couple of climbing trips, and of course, the working bees! I hope that many do turn up to see and hear Henrys slide and talk night. It will be a good one!
As for how much will it cost - totally affordable but these details are just being finalised and Tony will let you know soon.
Cheers,
Tracey
