Keep your eye on this site for our next proposed trip! You are more than welcome. Are you leading on trad outdoors or on bolts in the gym?

I still stand by the comment about doing an outdoor lead course then. There is heaps to learn and heaps of ways to really screw up outdoors. Perosnally myself would not be super keen to climb with someone outdoors who has only led in the gym. There really is no gym style safe routes under grade 22 in Victoria. To lead below this grade you will need to know how to place trad and to setup equalized anchors ect. I certainly don't want to put a dampener on your outdoor ambitions - you just might have to slow down a little. Don't expect to be leading 22 outdoors on your first day out! Do you have your own transport to get to the crag or do you need a lift? Where aprox do you live?

Lisa, it looks to me that you are a secondary school student. If so you are going to need informed parental consent to participate in this. If I've misread this, then I apologise but I'd prefer to err on the side of caution.

What was this forum about again? I might set up the Lisa Fan Club seperately (just to save confusion)

I think I've seen you guys down at cliffhanger. There's only one girl that frustrates my more and thats the 10-12 y.o. girl who climbs 25!
Good onya. Don't be discouraged. Sounds like its got under your skin (this is good-we're all in the same boat). Just take your time to learn the ropes properly and get confident leading outdoors at each grade. This will save you scaring the shit out of yourself and throwing it all away. There are grade 10s and 12s outdoors that will seriously scare you if you dive in the deep end. Neil's spot on. If you want to lead outdoors, do a course. You will probably meet others to climb with too.

Hi Lisa,

Welcome! You sound like you're keen as mustard to improve your climbing, and branch into some outdoor stuff. Your ability to pick things up quickly will certainly be very helpful, but don't confuse this with the (dangerous) urge to advance yourself before your time, if you know what I mean. As the others suggest, you should really look into doing a course, and earn your stripes on lots of easy stuff till you are really confident on gear. May I suggest you get in touch with Arapiles Climbing Guides (tel (03) 5387 1284). They run excellent "Learn to Lead" courses.

Cheers
jac

alec, the girl you are thinking of is a 10yo girl called maddie, the one with the short dark hair. she is very good and is part of team cliffhanger, she has been climbing since she was 4 and there is another guy there called angus, he is also part of team cliffhanger and i think that he is 13, he can climb the big lead climb up the roof. we usually train there on tuesdays. i have only been there once or twice since i got back from fiji which was in october, there are some good climbers in our group too.
thanx jac, i think i will do a lead course but i dont know when i can get up to araps again ( i just came back on sunday) we had a guide but we only ( unfortunatly ) did top rope on dec crag, bushrangers bluff and organ pipes, we were only there for 2 days, we did some higher grade climbs aswell like a couple of 20's but they were only on top rope and i understand how different trad/lead is. do you know if they have any of these courses at the you yangs??? thats pretty close to me so that would be good if i could do that these hols, thanx for suggestions. - sorry this was long!
