So I thought I'd ask:
Dear AEC,
I have a friend who has not voted for 10 years but wants to do so now. Will he be fined for not voting in the previous elections if he enrols now and starts voting.
thanks
xxxx
and they even replied...
Thank you for your email.
The AEC is more concerned with ensuring everyone who is eligible to vote does so. There will be no penalties for your friend if he enrols to vote.

Good news all round, as far as I can see...

Well after reading this little thread no one can ever make the assumption that climbers are "uneducated drop outs with no idea or care of the world around them".
I feel 10% smarter just for reading this thread ;-)
In all honesty Little Lying Johny has got to go but who to replace him with, its just tweedle dum and tweedle dumber, Although tweedle dum does have Peter Garett and after watching him being interviewed I for once actually partly believe the words that have come out of a politicians mouth.

Couldnt agree more. And this brings my thoughts back to the compulsory voting thing - i will vote at the next election (it takes 5 minutes when you live in a town of 600 people) because it is compulsory. I just wish there were some politicians worth voting for on the voting slips.

Well I have to disagree, it was certainly pretty hopeless with Crean and Beazley, but you can't really complain about Howard and not give Rudd a chance. What do you expect him to do, fix everything while he's Opposition Leader?

Can't believe you didn't mention ... ML... :-)
Which would have only further underlined your point about a better choice.
Even the weary and disillusioned could see it this way: a choice between a person who might turn out to be a lying cynic who will screw us over - or a person who's already been DOING it for 11 years.

John Howard will win because John Howard IS Australia.
And we are psychologically incapable of understanding an alternative.

I once heard that voting is our only chance to keep the bad guys out. So in the end it doesn't matter who you vote for because "it's always gonna be between a douche and a turd sandwich," it's keeping the far worse options out that counts.

If that's the case, then I guess we could always Photoshop it, clone out all the ugly bits, tweak it, digitally manipulate it - so to speak. It would be a happier picture but is that what people want?

agree M10, first time ever :)
I'm sick of this change for changes sake mentality that pervades the avg australian
JH ain't perfect but look at that team around Rudd
Gillard - ambitious and brainless
Swan - a lightweight intellect
Bob McMullan - one of the biggest duds in aus political history
Macklin - say no more
Albanese - incapable double dealer
Combet- surprise, surprise
Shorten - more than ever a union party!
only one with a shred of talent is Tanner..............

I don't think so, buddy , the China syndrome didn't really start until 2003 ; and consider the fact that the asian economic crisis (including China ) occurred in the late 90's ... JH fendered ' us ' very well from all that .
Over 2u ... or any other armchair commys:P
