how much is standard rates of pay for window cleaning on abseil? Do you need qualifications or can you
get on the job training? what else do you need to look out for?

How long is a piece of string?

Rope access work and window cleaning on ropes are 2 different things, both pay shit, but if you can get the work (you got to have the trade skills to get the jobs) it can pay alrite. Being able to abseil into somewhere (aiding in is fractionaly harder) is about 5% of the job, what you can do when you get there is the other 98.5%.

Most access workers do not consider window cleaning to be "real access work". But talk to an access worker who's been doing it for several years and they'll tell you there are easier ways to make a living.

As for qualifications, depends on who your working for and where your working. Washing a few windows for some dodgy operator may be a little slacker than changing a flang gasket on a flair on a rig in the middle of Bass Straight. Make senses?

window cleaning sucks balls, being on the tools is way better so try & do that. i get about $25/hr which is pretty 'bottom line' so to speak
in terms of quals, just start with green card, snr first aid, level 1 IRATA or ARAA cert. but youll be pretty useless when ya start anyway, as noob said its 1% about getting there but 99% what you can do when you when you're there

So if a window cleaner gets around 25 dollars an hour for basic quals. Do you have any idea what a qualified fitter or electrician or any other trades for that matter might expect to be paid to replace a flange gasket or to replace a proxy cell on an otherwise inaccessable valve on a rig in the bass straight.
Considering the pay that tradespeople get on these remote rigs is substantially higher than they can expect working a 5 day week in the cities, how much is the rope access work qualification actually worth on top of that when compared to what a garden variety tradesmen might get paid to change the ubiquitous flange gasket accessable from the deck of a remote rig in the bass straight.
also how much do these quals actually cost to attain?

if you have a trade like a sparky, fitter, etc or even just a welder, combine that with an IRATA level 3 & you can get offshore contracts (on oil rigs etc)- 3 months of hard work but you make a LOT of money

Hey, I work offshore. It pays heaps.

But, you can make just as much with a trade working in Melbourne. Unless you plan on leaving the country for a couple of years and get tax-free status. Like in Dubai or Singapore or something.

I'm tax-free... it's nice.
Jimminy clip it !!

They'll need more than skills! these days you need the appropriate ticket for working at height, otherwise
it's illegal to do the work at all...... skills or not.

many years ago before there was anyone doing rope acces work i was asked to abseil about 6 times down a city building holding a measure to record the distance off a true vertical of a building . my ropes werent long enough to reach without joins so i put them onto a friend . He negotiated for $500 plus 2 new ropes and a harness it took about 2 hrs . Much later i found out that the convential means of the times would have been in excess of $50000 so everyone had a really good win out of the deal i wish i'd thought to ask for new gear. there was a verandah protecting and hiding from the street

So, i would like to know is it a must to have a level 1 ARAA or Irata. Or could you just start with an employer with a working at heights ticket and get trained up. On the ARAA it did say they recommend, not you must.
I don't have a ticket but another abseiler working with me has?

Trained up to abseil, or trained up to clean windows?

Tha hole regulation thing is a crock that makes money 4 a SELECT few and restricts competition for the business from others. A bit like climbing certification ay U say?
Not only that but the training expires and the refresher courses will cost extra!
Go figure.

Building owners an insurance companies love indemnity by putting the perceived responsibility on acredditted accredditers an accreditee wannabee clients.
Cheaper to go to 1 of the many forging sites an buy a 1 off bit of paper as building managers (based on random sample of tha 1 I kno), don't know the diff.

Theres many things within Australian Standards that are left intentionally grey. But you will not be considered to be a 'competent person' really. Its definitely a somewhat dodgy 'Dad and Dave' type operation that operates with untrained people. I did my first access gigs like this and its not the way to go.

Its a 5 day course that costs $1600. If you really want to actually make money in Rope Access and you have no trade papers you want to get to Level 3 asap. Do IRATA as its more recognised the ARAA and will give you more options down the line. There pretty much the same anyway.

You may be able to find someone to put you through your course, but thats definitely not common place.
