Both Roadie and Mtber, My Specialised Stuntjumper FSR Comp is a thing of pure joy. Part of a 6 person team for this years Mont 24hour, really looking forward to the challenge.

Beach Rd is always an enjoyable ride.

Racing triathlons since 1998 up to and including Ironman. Duathlon World Championships in less than four weeks!

Raced Road one season (well actually only two races... - calf injury on the second day of the Tour of Cardinia put me out for the rest!!). Toying with the idea of getting my race licence again for 06.

Would love to give track racing a go. Especially would like to give the 4km ITT a good crack. Been to watch a few races at Vodaphone arena including the Worlds earlier in the year.

XC mountainbiking. If only I could sneak another bike into the house (already three taking up the back room - can't leave my babies out in the cold!)

@Garreth - beach road is okay, it's the hills where it's at!

Off Topic (sorry Tim) anyone else doing the Audax Alpine Classic this January? I'm signing up for the 200km again!

Climber who used to ride...
4 fractured vertebrae in the Blueies put an end to that little game. I find climbing much safer...

I've often wondered how many climbers ride also.
I ride XC, I ride in endurance events or train for them more often than I climb and nearly every time I go climbing I find myself sitting 20-30m from the ground on a warm cliff belaying only the sound of a # 9 hex clinking to be heard, looking out at a great view and thinking I have things the wrong way around. (I should be climbing more than riding), Oh its a hard life......
Also this year I have taken up Telemark skiing more seriously, my new favourite!, the speed of riding, freedom from trails, wilderness and great landscapes.

Former XC racer.
Most biking these days is commuting. More climbing less biking on the weekends.
Still reasonably fit but would get ma ass whupped if I showed up for a race I expect.
1-2 triathlons a year for the hellavut.

Oh, PUSHbikes.
...Um I have an old Diamondback (Axis?) that was slowly upgraded with XT, rockshocks, nukeproofs, synchros, Ti, spd etc. Don't ride it much now though.
I should get back into it. I used to love an early morning ride through the Blueys, early enough to be riding through mist etc. Fantastic.
Has anyone else done the Blackheath to Mittagong via Wild Dogs/Yerranderie etc? I recommended it, though prolly not legal anymore.

We do mix it up, last weekend's road ride was the 'The Wall' up the back of Mt Dandenong. Bloody steep little bugger.

I cycled round there once and was glad I went the way i did 'cause if I'd had to cycle up the steeper hill i think i'd have been going so slow I'd had risked falling off !! That's what's nice about beach road .. flat (and hardly any traffic lights... !!). Kinglake is probably the closest melbounes equiv, but a bit of a distance to get to without driving first. But they where the days when i did about 250 - 300km a week.. No other city is as good for cycling as beach rd, I reckon, and OS i'd pick Vancouver as a great place for MTB'ing...

Best cycle was from Barcelona to Rome....

I never rode up the sealed road at Cootha - always on the single-track dirt.... in comparison riding round
Melbourne is SO easy, I'm yet to find a hill anywhere :)

Have a go at Mt St Leonards. 22km up, then turn around for a 22km down hill. It was my fav when I lived in Melb.

Do more MTB than climbing actually! Into the whole gamut, everything from XC marathons to leaping off not so tall buildings on freeride courses. Climbing is so boring when compared to mtb or snowboarding!

Is that the main fire trail from Donellys weir? Interested in the circuit to get 22km of climbing.

Longest Melbourne hill is Mt Donna Buang from Warburton. 16.4km at 6.4% average.

For those skeptical that hills exist around Melbourne. Check out 1 in 20, the wall and Devils Elbow on Mt Dandenong, Mt Donna Buang or Kinglake.

melbourne isn't worth bringing the MTB too... it's really quite crap in comparison to where i used to live. Infact Melbourne is crap for climbing and MTB, i reallly don't know why i live here. IF only the poker wasn't so good !!

Welcome to Chockstone Clive.

Agreed Christmas Hills after Kinglake is a great loop. Out that way are other little trafficed gems such as Humevale, Myers and Chum creek Roads...

And never said beach road was easy. The Hell ride is a cycling institution and inflicts severe carnage ever week on many who think they are ready!

I’m really into long distance XC mtb’ing, I’ve got a Shogun trailbreaker pro II. There’s this awesome trail I ride frequently called the Great Dividing Trail, some of you may have heard of it, it goes from Ballarat right up to Bendigo through towns such as Creswick, Daylesford, Castlemaine, etc. from Daylesford instead of going to Bendigo, you can also head south through Blackwood to Bacchus marsh. I usually only get around to riding to Creswick and back to Ballarat on a Saturday, around 50-60km. Lots of granny gearing up hills, but also rolling down hills, no pedalling at around 50km/h! Good fun fire trail and single track. I’m still waiting for a big stack. If there's anyone around Ballarat who wants to ride, feel free to PM me, I hardly have anyone to ride with and it’s not the best practise to go riding on your own, just like climbing.

Sounds like Dalai knows whats what for budding hill climbing roadies. Would you be able to provide details of these rides around Kinglake. I've done a bit of MTBing out that way but never bothered with the roadie.
