I'm pleasantly surprised. This turned into a metal reminiscence thread. We need Andrew McCullough to educate us.
Neil, if you're up for your Epic Symphonic Power Metal, You ought to like Appocoliptica (spell?) - A power metal string quartet. Perhaps Scandavaian? They looked like Yngvie Malmstein's brothers anyway. They used to cover metalica tunes, etc.
Poorly paraphrased from Krakaeur's Eiger Dreams (Regarding his and Marc Twight's Eiger attempt)
"We were trying to go light. Marc left his sleeping bag behind in favour of taking his walkman and 2 tapes, prefering the solace afforded by Jane's Addiction and the Clash on frigid bivouacks"

To me, it just doesnt get any better than when Michael Bolton hits the high note on 'When a man loves a woman'.
(Im joking, please for the love of god im joking.....)
Actually, the man in black Johnny Cash used to sing a song called 'The Wall' which might be pretty insparational for the new routers out there (except for the bits about falling and dying).
The Wall - Johnny Cash
"Theres a lot of strange men in cell block ten
But the strangest of them all
Was a friend of mine who spent his time staring at the wall
Staring at the wall
As he stared at that wall so strong and tall
You could hear him softly curse nobody at all
Ever climbed that wall but i'm gona be the first
Yeah i'm gona be the first
The warden walked by and said son don't try
I'd hate to see you fall
For there is no doubt they'll carry you out
If you ever touch that wall
If you ever touch that wall
Well a years gone by since he made his try
But I can still recall
How hard he tried and the way he died
But he never made that wall
He never made that wall
Theres never been a man ever shook this can
But I know a man who tried
The newspapers called it a jail break plan
But I know it was suicide
I know it was suicide"

As long as I can find Gregorian Chant tracks remixed by Tool, R.A.T.M., Infected Mushroom or Astral
Projection - I'm there!

hmm.. usually taken up by voices instead, muttering-
bouldering: "aagh, i'm going to break my ankle!"
slabbing: "aarh, i'm going to rip my skin off!"
crimpy: "aarh theres nothing there!"
cracks: "sh$! f$@$ cr!$ this hurts!"
overhanging jug hauls: "rrrgghh!!!! hmpfff!!! grrrrr!!!"

Having finished watching a video last night (see other thread) I flicked back to Ch 2 and and got the end of Spicks and Specks. There was a clip of Twisted Sister in all their Poodle Glory doing "Leader of the pack"!
But then again, a lot of the music being discussed here is 'after my time'. :-(

I'm with you Bill. Twisted Sister 'Stay Hungry' side two 'I want to Rock'. How can you go past the lyrics:
I want to rock (twice)
I want to rock
I want to rock
Although maybe Miles From Nowhere - Cat Stevens gets my vote. Don't really want to hear it blasting away at the crag but it's where I'd rather be now.

I'd also like to add that I love to listen to the odd bit of inspirational heavy metal or punk rock track while bouldering (im well aware of the irony of my taste in music) and maybe even when climbing in a gym. But I HATE it outdoors at any form of crag. The only sound I like to hear when outdoor climbing is if it involves a friend of mine singing across a mountain in the love of the sport. Trashy unnatural subwoofers can stay in the boot of european's cars as far as I'm concerned. Lol there's a generalisation for you Shin Toe :P I'm joking, I'M JOKING by the way.

Wat about some Symphonic / Progressive Metal for Neil? Try Nightwish, great mix: fully trained opera singer with a highly skilled metal band, they are absolutely awsome musitions!!!

it's cool, anyway I'm aussie, so it must be ok to drive my armoured X5 with integral rave soundsystem &
remote control, riding roughshod over fragile bush habitat straight up to the base of the crag and fire up the
twin-turbo powered Subwoofers with a tasteful medley of Speed Metal and upbeat Techno. SWEEEET!!

I thougt this was a 'climbing' forum?
Uncle Chester is trolling methinks ...
, but I'll bite a little.
I'm with Nick Kaz on this one
>I dont conciously listen to music when im climbing, however, sometimes I get 1 or 2 lines of a song in my head and it just goes over and over and.... It could be anything too, no particular style or song, gives me the shits if I dont lke the song.
... If I do like the song it can help the 'moment' though.
