Is this what you posted about, Mildred?
Is there a connection here?

By the way dearie, Derek my M10 love says that this is all nonsense and has gone quite off topic, but never mind him deary because I know he only has Totem Pole on his mind. I know this because all he could say when I showed him the new fleece and puffa gear, was that it "would be great to wear if the weather is fine at the Tote", and he seems unenthusiastic for any housework chores lately, but would rather play with his equipment instead.

Excuse me please (Mrs M10 et al), ... may I interrupt for a moment?

BTW; Entertaining thread this one (imo).

Musings from a climber who has not got out lately ...

I have not done the climb, (nor am I likely to at the grade given); ... but I have been thinking about the picture / link above; taken by Simon Carter & is from Chockstone Interviews site, titled: Simon Mentz's fall from grace; The Prow (27). Bluff Major, Mt Arapiles, Victoria.

Was specifically thinking about Simons body position in it relative to the 'new info' (for me anyway), of the photo posted by Harold.

If one gets through the crux (assumes the Harold post pic is it), to the easier (less steep), ground above; ... then falls; ... Would not the fallen climber be closer to the rock if the fall was unexpected?

If the fall was expected and Simon pushed off in the process, what would be the advantage in that? ... given the overhanging territory down lower? ... Would be harder on the ankles swinging back into the wall methinks!

I am strongly suspecting (like the John 'Verm' Sherman LOTR photo), a 'staged shot'.

Thoughts anyone?
Confirmation/denial Simey? / unknown belayer? or Onsight?

None of this (my hypothesis) detracts from the quality or composition of the photograph/s, nor from the obvious ability of Simon to get up the climb.

Of all the things written about me, I've gotta say that is by far the worst accusation. To even suggest that I would consider posing for a climbing photo is scurrilous gossip and makes a mockery of everything I hold dear and true in climbing.

Fair enough.
Heh, heh, heh.
I don't really know you but it seems from my reading of this thread that you don't pose with the women, ... so I thought it possible that you might pose for them?

I think the most controversial aspect of the photo is that he seems to be climbing in jeans.........perhaps if he hadnt of been wearing jeans he wouldnt have fallen or perhaps he wore jeans because he knew he was going to fall and needed something to reduce the bark he was going to take off or perhaps they are are not jeans and are instead slacks.....

What you would prefer to see him in LYCRA!!!!!!!?
Ever since a few hardmen did some routes in jeans the wannabe world has been trying to play catchup. If there had been girls around he would have had a pair of KT-26's on too.

I've gotta say a few words in Simey's defense here... they are not jeans!

Don't think he needs anybody to come to his defence, after all he did write the guide book, even if it is only the "best of".
By the way did you find out which Oxford St publication stole the photo?

According to
here
It is out of stock, and the new edition is due out at end of 2007, 2008, 2009!

Is there going to be a chapter on 'what to do
>If there had been girls around' ?

or 'Fashion for the opposite sex conscious climber'?

?

Heh, heh, heh.

Well if you want to be famous, then forget being good at something and focus on being really, really bad at something... just like Eddie the Eagle in ski jumping and Eric the Eel in swimming. Everyone remembers them. The Nati Rams have had the honour of being the worst team in footy over last few years and look at the amount of press we received.

Climbing has had its fair share of bumblies, but just who is undisputed king of the bumblies? (Apart from Eduardo). Here is an opportunity for someone to really make a name for themselves.

Maybe I could write a book........or open a cafe.

I once stumbled across the expression "bumbly chic" in some climbing text, where exactly escapes me at this juncture.

However, I resolved then and will publicy affirm now; I wish to wholly epiomise "bumbly chic" i.e. not starting at araps 'til 10, taking 4 hrs to get up siren and talking it up like it's a savage test of climbing skill and verve, I think is a good start.............................

Typo? ... 'chic' or 'chick'; like

>talking it up like it's a savage test of climbing skill and verve
... or an excuse for climbing like an old blouse?
Your not allowed to claim the title from (allegedly Eduardo?) until you have over-night-epic-ed on it ! *

Hey Idratherbe.....

chic I believe is correct:

from websters (not the best source I know)

Chic \Chic\, a. [F. Cf. Chic, n.]

Original and in good taste or form. [Colloq.]

epiomise is a most dastardly typo......

my aim is a 2 day ascent of "son of epic"

the lectin will happen in 07

I like where this is heading. I've always want to be recognised for my contributions to climbing, and the
bech mark for bumblyness is as good as anything....for there is only one thing worse than being talked
about, and that is not being talked about.

I'd lke to throw my hat into the ring with a claim of the slowest ascent of AoNang Tower in Thailand - 3 pitches, 6a+, 6b+, 6c+ (from memory), in... seven hours! And then the fun of trying to attract the attention of a passing longtail boat in the dark.
