Good morning, Melbourne. Another working bee took place last night. I must say I am really impressed with the dedication of all those involved. We made fantastic progress - it now looks like something that will be a climbing wall! Passers-by were very interested in proceedings. As darkness fell, a couple of local men wandered by and asked what we were doing, and what the structure was for. "It's to hold the bridge up, isn't it !!!" they insisted.

I took photos for you with all the good intentions in the world to publish them first thing this morning. But it seems I am a little tired. I left the house without my bag. So I will do today with no mobile phone, no money, and no photos for you. Sorry everyone! Oh well, I will publish pictures Monday morning.

Best wishes

that fencing in the background is to keep the boulderers in their new enclosure. if someone has the balls to get in there to steal stuff good luck to them. i've seen what those little blighters can do when they get stirred up

The 45 and 30 degree walls will be in the region of 8 meters wide.

We did heaps yesterday - I think everyone was surprised how much got done in a (long) day of work. There's another group there today... not too long until all the steel is done!

Hi everyone,

Please find below the pictures from Thursday's working bee.

Tim Le with the grinder.

Anita Sharma customising a bolt hole while Will Monks (less than pleased not to be the one with the drill in his hand!!) provides a counter-weight.

Will Monks and Anita Sharma check the alignment of bolt holes.

A piece of framework waits to be lifted into place.

The first glimpse of the 45 degree wall.

Tim Le back in action on the grinder.

The 45 degree wall at the end of Thursday's work. (Sorry about the focus – it was late!!)

Once again, a huge thankyou to everyone that lends a hand on the Burley Project!

Must say an outstanding effort by everyone involved. Great stuff.

Specially must tip my Hat at Jac for her persistance and perseverence over the years, given this all got underway in Feb 03.

Cheers,

Rob

(FYI Mods: The long URL in the News portion of the frontpage throws out the display in Netscape, may I suggest a hyperlink instead?) [all fixed now!]

Wow, must be a bit of an optical illusion, because the 45 degree wall doesn't look 45 degrees in the picture. Must be a weird trick of the light or something.

One local Frog Buttress climber who shall remain nameless would advise Eddie "the Energiser" Rawlins to not drill towards one's crotch.

I thought that too.
Interesting perspective if it is 45 degrees ...

A (different) professional curiosity question, for anyone that knows the answer.
I am not familiar with the site, but from the pictures I gather that the Burnley Wall is adjacent a stream and located on the under-structure of a bridge. I also note that the table in one picture consists of a gabion (rocks in wire cage) as a support. This indicates to me that flood flows are expected to reach at least the height of the table.

You could expect quite a lot of debris after a significant flood event.

Who clears flood debris off / cleans mud off, and checks for structural damage to the climbing wall after such a flood?

If the water is at all saline you may also find that corrosion to bolts etc may start to occur if they are not hosed down also after being inundated?

I can't answer your questions re maintenance, but I can confirm that recent flood events (ie within the last couple of years) would have had the effect of putting the bottom meter of the wall under water.

To address the matter of the wall being outdoors and thus subject to moisture, and also subject to the occasional flood, the wall is "over-engineered", so to speak. Apart from being ridiculously strong, all framework & bolts are galvanised to prevent rusting. All panels are marine plywood (the super expensive kind) so they can cope with being under water sometimes.

The maintenance of the wall will be the responsibility of the VCC, working together with Parks Victoria.
