Re insurance claim. It wouldn't affect it unless they lied to insurers about having sprinklers. Their premium would've just been higher than normal. It is quite common to be insured without fire protection. Unfortunately for them there was a fire. Very sad

Indeed - a very generous offer - thankyou Tim on behalf of everyone. A very generous offer that will help people to minimise disruption to their training schedule :-)

I was down at the site this morning working.... press photography can be a real b!tch at times. I've sent a couple of shots through to Mike hoping he'll put them up.
I know it sounds silly, but I was fighting back tears the whole time I was there. So many years climbing there, so many memories. The site will no doubt be bull dozed, safest option really.
Oh, and the c--ky from Lombards was in good spirits, dancing and talking for the cameras.

It saddens me to think of climbs, the holds, the bouldering pads with my sweat marks, and everything else that now no longer exists. My condolences to all. I will never forget the sweetest darn climbing place in Melbourne.

Wow, just logged in and read this thread! And to think I was just going to go rock up to the gym today and take a break from study... Well looks like that won't be happening! Thanks for the offer Cliffhanger, looks like I'll finally get a chance to check out Altona!

For the benefit of people that don't own cars that might want to hunt for a ride to Cliffhanger, I have started a new thread under the "Find Climbers" Forum called "Car Pooling to Cliffhanger Climbing Gym". Use it to find yourself a ride if you consider this to be a helpful idea........

I knew it was bad but seeing the disaster in a pic makes it harder to bare. My heart just sunk. Sorry to all who saw it all in person, it must of been hard.

I know that a few Chockstoners work at the gym, presumably on a casual basis. No gym means no work.
That sucks, guys. The gym burning down is inconvenient at best for most of us - its' impact on you is of
course a lot higher...

Thank god no one was injured in the fire. Still, this is really bad news for all - climbers and staff.

And I was concerned when they raised prices. Hmmmm, seems pretty insignificant now. Perhaps a minutes silence for the passing of what was one of the coolest, most laid-back climbing gyms in Melbourne. (insert silence here) My sympathy to the owner and all the staff and to all the people for whom Vic Ranges was a second home.
