They like summits though.
Have you noticed how their cubes are left on TOP of prominent features (rocks, logs etc) ...
Territorial markings to ward off evil trolls, hexes etc?

As spring begins animals become more active, leaving behind little brown messages as they search for food and mates. Scats provide a host of information about their producers - as long are you can read them before you step in them!

Scats, faeces, or just plain poo - these digested wastes left behind by animals are universally avoided by all but Hex, the most dedicated animal lovers, vets and scientists and are often hidden in the peanut butter jar at unsuspecting hosts residences

SS short story is periscope down - stealthily lurking in the deep waters off the Kamchatkan Peninsula, trying to put out a fire in the galley* - but at the same time lulling you into a deep, comforting and cosy sense of security (Hexy, have a drink of this, good? uh huh? Hmmm....Zzzzzzzz*), but inevitably it will resurface with a vengeance and fury not seen since Damo was last seen heading for a milkshake at the Nati....from which he never returned......A dark coloured Audi was spotted in the carpark across the road but was subsequently snaffled by the local football team and was later seen being raffled off as part of their fundraiser for a new bar in their club/trophy room.

Since we have a little talk about wombats and cubic poos (and seeing Damieta loves stories) heres a story about a wombat named Matilda...

When I was 12 years old, I had a baby wombat (1 week out the pouch, totally legal situation - that's another story). Her name was Matilda and she lived with me for 2 years. Yes, she had cubic poos! (but then so do most dry-grass eating Australian Marsupials) But even more amazingly, she was toilet trained... yes a whole pile of cubic poo!

She got banished back to the wildlife park when she got heavier than me and started chewing my hair at night while I slept. She went on to breed another two baby wombats (matilda was the first wombat EVER born in captivity)

Thanks for reminding me about Matilda and her cubic poo...

Love NJ xo

Secret Sex Life of Wombats
Thursday, 7 November 2002

'...How do you get a wombat to have sex? Apparently they’re pretty picky and can get nasty if they don’t fancy their date.

Catriona McCallum, thinks trying to get wombats to 'get it on' is the best job in the world. She's been studying the mating habits of wombats in an attempt to start a successful captive breeding program for common wombats at Western Plains Zoo in NSW.

Her research into their fertility cycle, preferred habitat and eating habits has been a success with a world first outcome: twin baby wombats. This captive breeding program for common wombats is being developed for use as a model to help save the highly endangered Northern Hairy-nosed Wombats...

Full Program Transcript:
Narration: Meet Milton. He’s a friendly Common Wombat with a soft spot for the ladies, and right now he’s looking for love. The lucky female wombat lined up to meet him is Bella. She’s a shy retiring type. Our matchmaker is Catriona MacCallum.

What’s remarkable here is up until now no-one knew how to get wombats to breed in captivity.

Catriona MacCallum: Actually wombats are exceptionally difficult to breed in captivity. And I think one of the main problems is compatibility. So we have to introduce them over a period of time.

Narration: Over the last two and a half years Catriona has been using science to work out the secret sex life of wombats. And today is the big day for Milton and Bella, will the chemistry sizzle or fizzle?

Catriona MacCallum: Milton, guess who’s here, time to meet the woman of your dreams.

Wombat breeding is a difficult task

Narration: Bella is keeping a low profile in the burrow, but once Milton gets close sparks fly.

Catriona MacCallum: He will actually physically chase her for about two hours and around in a figure of eight.

Narration: Every so often he catches Bella and bites her on the bum, this is wombat foreplay...'

Interesting Transcript Hexy....

Considering Matilda was born (as in stepped out of the pouch - her actual birth date could not be determined) in Hervey Bay's Natureworld (a small, privately owned wildlife park no longer in existence) in January 1990, I think Catriona MacCallum was a little late. The father was one of the 'actual' FATSOs from A Country Practice (he was fatso number 4 - there were 8 all up) and my mother was recognised as the breeder of the first captive wombat (ever) in the QWPA Annual Meeting (1991).

Matilda is a common wombat and her breeding was by mistake. Her parents lived together on and off in turmoil for 4 years until Matilda was noticed as a lump in the pouch in late 1989. Fatso and Flossie (the mother) also bred two sons a couple of years later (digger & nugget) and Matilda bred 2 babies years later in Healsville (sp?) Sanctuary (the original owners of Fatso).

I'd like to speak to Catriona....
