Hi all,

Not sure if asking for snow advice on a rockclimbing forum is taboo, but here we go! Happy to accept all insults you send my way :)

I'm aware of what an absolute long-shot this is but:

I'm doing a shoot on the date in the title. Unfortunately it's the only date available due to me flying to Pakistan on the following Monday and my filmographer to Canada.

We need some snow, and looking around the place there seems to be zilch currently or forecasted.

So - does anyone know where is likely to getting the first inklings of any snowfall (either traditionally or this season), or any reliable (as they can be) long range forecasts. Or any info at all!

Need to be within 6-7 hours drive of Sydney max (ideally..). Doesn't need to be a mountain covered like in winter glory, just some form of snow covering that the filmographer can work some magic with. Ie. trudging through some snow, enough that it can be edited to look like more than it is.

Also, and an even longer shot, any where were they may be some form of ice wall, frozen waterfalls etc. Again, nothing spectacular, just enough to get some close in shots of my axes/crampons being imbedded.

I realise this the chances of this are quite low given how early it is in the season, but any information on where I can narrow my search will be greatly appreciated.

Short of this, does anyone work at a McDonalds with a cool room I can change the settings on, or have a freezer that needs defrosting ;)

Any questions fire away as I may be able to give more detail that may help.

Upon my return in August sometime I'll be happy to shout and share some beers for any assistance as payback!

Cheers
Chris

I fly from Melbs to Sydney regularly and there's no snow anywhere at the mo. There was a dusting a couple of weeks back but that's long gone. Best resource I've found for checking the forecast is this one http://forums.ski.com.au/xf/forums/weather.16/

Don't want to get your hopes up but there's a current thread discussing the possibility of some snow from the weather system this weekend http://forums.ski.com.au/xf/threads/27th-30th-may.78165/

Otherwise, NZed?

Froggys is your best best for accurate snow forecast..

http://www.snowatch.com.au/1-7-day-forecast/ - this week a few days of snow...1400m is perisher base to give you and idea of how far down it meant to fall.

http://www.snowatch.com.au/8-14-day-forecast/ - not much more but says snow making likely so temps should be cold enough for previous snow to hold on ground.

Hes doesn't start forecasting for NZ until start of June nut the Remarkables had snow mid may and looks like its holding on ground..

The first inklings of snow in NSW are going to be on Mt Kosciusko.
For weather forecasts over the next week, the BOM website for Thredbo and Perisher ( http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/perisher.shtml ) will be as accurate as anything else but updated daily. The forecasts for skiers are not likely to be updated regularly at this time of the year

It does look like there is a front coming through later in the weekend that will be cold enough to produce some snow showers in the alpine areas. Good quantities of precipitation predicted, just a question of how much of it comes down as rain. I would check the snow cams on the resort websites (Perisher/Thredbo) on Monday morning to give you an idea if anything has actually eventuated. If there is clearly enough for you then go for it.
If there are some indications of snow, but not enough, there may be more above the resorts. I would ring NSW parks office in Jindabyne and ask them if there is snow on Kosciusko. Your best bet is to get as high as possible.

You're not going to get ice. If you're lucky enough to get snow, you might scrape enough together to pile and pack it up against a boulder.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the info guys.

Guess I'll wait until mid-late next week and make some enquires around Thredbo/Perisher area and give NSW parks a call.

Cheers!

Got much of a budget? The only way you are going to get all of that is on a glacier in NZ. Fly to NZ (~3hrs) then jump on a heli to Tasman glacier or the like (~2hrs). I know its not driving but if your lucky you could be standing in snow/ice under 7hrs that way.
