O.T. - Gender equality my ar*se!!!!

Today. Melbourne, Australia, 7th March 2017.
At exorbitant cost to the tax-paying citizens of 'The Most Livable City In The World', we Melburnians are to have the 'little green man' on the pedestrian crossing lights changed to a 'little green woman' coz (a faction of) our fairer friends (I'm male) think its unfair and demand gender equality.
The city is spending Ridiculous amounts of money on a 'trial' of a bunch of key crossings. If this 'trial' is deemed a success ALL crossings in Victoria will be changed to the green lady.
FFS, I shake my head I really do.
What about the poor LGBTXYZ men who wear dresses and the 'wimmin' who dress like blokes? Or our Muslim friends with their burkas etc? Where's their say? Let alone the disabled?
FFS again. Cut the crap and just do what the Americans do and flash 'WALK' or 'DON'T WALK'. How freekin' easy is it? Or does it have to be in multi-lingual too for fear of offending non-English speakers.
I'm Welsh and can speak the lingo, where's MY sign?
Extrapolate: Toilet door signs, traffic signs 'SLOW, workmen ahead', blahdi blahdi blah...... Any & Every sign to be changed to gender neutral coz a few fckn greenies arked up and winged! Makes my bl**dy blood boil it really does. Yeah, coz it's coming out of MY taxes whereas we're short on Emergency Services, the hospitals and schools are dreadfully under-funded and our Premier reneged on a crucial infrastructure road tunnel project which cost us Victorians AU$ONE POINT ONE BILLION DOLLARS in penalties.
Right, am going for a walk to simmer down. Happens will pass the bottle shop so'll grab six.
T'ra,
AP.

"The lord mayor, Robert Doyle, was not impressed by the initiative.
“I’m all for doing anything we can for gender equity, but really?” he was quoted as saying by the Herald Sun. “Unfortunately, I think this sort of costly exercise is more likely to bring derision.”"

On the drive home I was impressed by the number of talkback callers who started along the lines of :
"I'm not against it per se, but..." (translated : I'm against it) and proceeded to ridicule it.

That's pretty much the standard reaction to any gender-related change since the push for female suffrage (and we know what a disaster that was).

The other textbook comment was "Haven't they got better things to think about?". Which begs the question, Haven't these people got better things to call a radio station about?

And the cost? Apparently the cost, if "they" decide to roll it out wiil be miniscule. One change at the factory and any field changes will be done when a set of lights comes up for routine maintenance.

Does it matter? Judging by the reaction I'd say it does. This obviously threatens the status quo and not in a bad way. I'd say bring it on.

I think, if I disagreed with it, that it would still be so far down my list of concerns about wasteful / unnecessary / frivolous use of public funds that I am doubtful I could work up the energy to have a whinge over a cup of coffee about it.

I think, if I felt ambivalent about it, it would still represent a positive change for enough people I care about, for me to in fact not feel ambivalent about it at all. In my reckoning of the world, that is all the argument I need.

That's as maybe Br Miggle but seriously, I mean, honestly! Not many people actually talk about clock rhyming on here and if they do its usually Nati v Blueys sh*te nine times out of ten anyway.
Maybe time for a social/pub/cafe area on here (Mods?) coz I don't climb so can't really join in there hey.
At least my post teased KieranL out of the woodwork ...which is more than I can say for most (Hi KL, hope all's well).
Anyway; back on topic: Little Green Man or Little Green Woman? What a complete & utter load of effin' B*LL*X and a waste of Our money - the money KL suggests is not much in the scheme of things. It's only around $860,000.00 for a handful for the 'test'. I'd've done it for $750k over the weekend! Times that by Every Single Pelican crossing in Victoria and soon see where our (your actually, not all but I voted otherwise) Premier spends Our money. New regional hospital for the kiddies or aged 'Dan'? 'Nah mate, not me faction'.

Now; to end on a less sour note; Am not against "gender equality" but the above green man/green woman example is beyond ridiculous. I shan't dare comment on behalf of the fairer sex but would hazard a guess the consensus from our (few) lady members would be a preference to spend the money on breast or ovarian cancer research rather than f*ckn traffic light signs.
What has 'Victoria. The Laughable State' come to?

Can't wait for the 'sensitive types' to respond to the above with Any, Remotely-Valid or commonsense reasons why traffic lights are more valuable to All society than cancer research for our Mums, sisters, daughters or lady friends.
Back to 'Dan': 'Sorry mate, hospital budget cuts, couldn't afford the chemo for your ex girlfriend - traffic lights to change for me left-wing radical female voters mate and jobs for the militant union". F*ck off. Just F*ck off and get real for heaven's sake.

Oi! Who nicked me coat ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I used to live near the the first of the aforementioned lady pedestrian crossings.

From a robotic purely functional view of the world I thought it unnecessary. However they were the catalyst for a couple of fun and non forced father daughter/son chats about inequality and discrimination etc. And after those couple of chats we moved on in life.

I know a few reacted with bah humbug nonsense against a sign and site all kind of crap about "reverse discrimination and what about the trans amputee blade people amongst us" but thankfully the climbers I know aren't that stupid.

Guys, relax. Get your facts sorted before you lose your minds in a rage.

- the money came from a community group sponsored by an electrical company. No government money was spent on this, not one cent. No money was taken from emergency services or schools.

- traffic lights do not come under the state government funding stream.

Who really cares if it's a woman. Is it really worth getting in a rage about? Why not get angry about things that actually matter? There are multiple issues all over the world to get angry about. And your losing your mind over a pedestrian traffic light? Come on.

Congratulations Andy on sounding like yet another ill informed John Laws listener. And thanks to those people who demonstrated brain use and pointed out that it has not cost the govt (or taxpayer) anything and that despite its limitations, it does spark useful conversations and serve to shake up those whose brains probably need the exercise. You may also like to note that it is not a planned roll out and not all of them. If it happens, it will be 50% of them and done as they would ordinarily be replaced anyway.

I also suggest you look at what health and education actually cost. $680 000 (if that figure was pulled from anywhere more informative than your arse), even if the govt had spent it, is about 0.0003 % of the cost of the upgraded Royal Adelaide Hospital. If you want to carry on about wasted govt expenses try the defense forces, parlimentary pensions, subsidies to multi-billion dollar companies, desperate efforts to catch welfare fraud, "border control", manus island, the list is long ... or perhaps you would like to contemplate whether indignation at climbers such yourself collecting the dole and going climbing is reasonable? Govts almost never spend money where I think it should go, but those lights are very low on the list of things worth carrying on about.

I have no objection to a female crossing the road (how's that KL?)
But I do object to half the population depicted wearing a weird frocked minidress thing. My kids know girls have long hair and eyelashes. Now apparently boys wear pants and girls wear 50s mini dresses - at least when they cross the road.

It's not like the little red person has a donger - although the that scale it wouldn't stand out anyway.
So whose to say if it's a boy or a girl walking across the road? Stick people don't have boobs..

Life's pretty good if the worst thing you have to complain about on a climbing web site is girly traffic signals.

Am ill alright Wendy, thought everyone knew that thanks but informed too, but I listen to Mitchell not Laws!

Am happy to stand *completely* corrected on the fact that I was incorrect in my original post about it being our taxes. Guilty as charged. Point being, our taxes *should* go towards hospitals, childrens' welfare, the aged etc. I just put cart before horse and the premise of my post was lost or misplaced.

,,,, (if that figure was pulled from anywhere more informative than your arse) ,,,

Herald Scum I think ,,, says it all, ha!

,,, or perhaps you would like to contemplate whether indignation at climbers such (as?) yourself collecting the dole and going climbing is reasonable?

It was Thatcher's Britain. There were few jobs and the Enterprise Allowance Scheme covered for dole & rent payments so I could legitimately go climbing .... Problem with that? - Considering I actually *did* make a career out of it and paid my taxes.

Ohh, we *are* on a roll aren't we Wendy..... but at least (for once) somebody puts a spark of conversation into this dull place.
I actually couldn't agree *more* with *any* of the examples you cite above, seriously, and am probably as ropable as yourself and others at the way (parts of) our society are being fiscally managed.

Over & out.
