I've heard this term used a fair bit, does anyone know where it comes from? Was there a notorious cheat called McDougal?

Pretty sure it stems from taking the easier option on Madge MacDonald (25), a route at Centennial Glen.

Just a variation on the name Mcdonald then? Interesting.

Its from Mitch Warren and describes when someone climbs around a crux.

He once told a punter (was it bundy ?) that was struggling on the top of Madge McDonald (25), that he was infact on Madge McDougal (24).

Always used it assuming it was in reference to old mad dog from his years at the knights:

I'm liking pcb's theory best. Although the Madge/Bundy one isn't too bad, but it sounds like it was a reference to a previous McDougal.

KP is correct. Madge Mcdougal is the left more popular finish to Madge Mcdonald. Mitch would call people out going left as mcdougalling the crux and the word stuck. From about 2002ish

I would have thought that it was a reference to the notorious Rugby League footballer, Adam McDougall, who was caught allegedly using banned substances..

Aaah the days of the McDougal, it somehow doesn't work when I try to explain it to bumblies down here. Like having to explain the punchline of a joke...
