G'day All, as a long time user of this World Class climbing area, I am prompted to find out more in regard to what we wanting, with regard to our beloved camp ground. So hear goes!

I voted for improvements to be made, because simey needs a stage and stage lighting when he hosts the Easter Arapiles Orientation events.

If the improvements are if the sort that improved the Grampians camping then I can safely say I'd rather see the mountain bulldozed - at least they wouldn't charge you for the experience.

I voted improvements because I think a good improvement would be to install a permanent bouldering pad under Golden Streak Boulder.
In the event of boulder congestion at easter I vote kman to be the keeper of the time allocation schedule for attempts.

If you need a location for Focus Group meetings, Edweirdo has already discussed this with simey and One Day Hero due the success of the last Araps Easter Orientation Programme meetings, but cant remember if the final choice (depends on numbers attending), was 31 Elmes St (look for house on high stumps), or the Colonic Irrigation Dojo in the white house opposite.

I am referring to the people who use the camping areas at Mt Arapiles. People who have living commitments elsewhere. Nevertheless, still have a say in what goes on. Yes!

I vote what Olbert said, but yes trees are always good.

By the way, is there an extra booking fee if you try to pay by phone. I have payed using their web site (which is weird that you can only pay for 2 people?) and then wondered if I decide to stay for a few more nights can I just ring them up, or will they slug me this $10 booking fee?

The system is a little inconvenient in that where and when you stay is pretty much weather dependent and you can only plan that so many days ahead.

Hey Robbie,

Maybe you missed this on 'The Pines Campground - What's Happening' thread -

The campground and tree issue was discussed at length last monday at the Arapiles Advisory Group meeting where we met at the park. This is moving forward with tree species being whittled down and the goal deadline is for the next planting season next year. This will be happening. We are all determined that decisions and moving forward with it need to occur. We have discussed putting a survey together so that those who use the park can contribute their thoughts. Lots of details to work out but there will be work days that people will need to be involved in and depending on funds and grants, there may be donations required to get this finally happening. I'm sure that some people won't be happy with the final decisions but like most things, there are lots of perspectives to take on board and finding a middle ground sometimes takes a while. I think though that for the most part, the choices that will be made will serve most people.
Once we get a survey sorted, the link will be put here for your contribution. Please continue to be interested. :-)

Cheers,
Tracey

And then this thread - Survey feedback requested on The Pines
campground

http://www.chockstone.org/Forum/Forum.asp?Action=Display&ForumID=1&MessageID=126365&Replies=0 (click on read all messages when you come to the original posting. For some reason it doesn't give you the whole visible thread)

All the survey feedback has been presented to the Arapiles Advisory Group and submitted in a report as required to Parks Victoria. Few things to be sorted before any kind of work can be started. Will upload some survey results in the near future.

Cheers,Tracey

Hi Tracey.

I think there should be a pines campground donations box at the driveway entrance of the campground and possibly another in the campground itself.

As many of us can agree the online booking is does not work well with many climbers. (But I can understand the multitude of reasons why it does work well for ParksVic.)

People who may have forgotten to book online or simply can't be bother to do so do exist and they end up not paying for their camping. Make an alternative donations box available and you might find that you get more money out of the campers.

I am not too sure about the new generation bouldering brigade (what has climbing become?), being too enamoured of a monument to aid, especially at Arapiles...

Hi there, have not been to araps for a year now, could you explain the new booking system? Can I not just rock up and pay then? Cheers.

remove online booking. If they want money we should be able to pay money not some bullshit of debt and credit through 3rd and 4th partys.

Totally with ya bro.
Yeh, uck banks, an piss off the online booking crap.
If parks don't want an honesty box does this mean they're dishonest?
If that's the case then what happened to all the fees previously paid by that system?

Luv ya simple an honest posts.

My motivation for getting this thread up is from a recent trip to Squamish in Canada. I stayed at the campground below the Chief. Another world class climbing venue like our Mt Arapiles. The Chief camping area has all types of campers, however there are plenty of climbers.
Things I liked:
* This place was not rundown. A similar standard to Mt Buffalo accept for no hot showers.
* Well organized an run.
* A simple honesty pay system that worked. $10 per person per night. No pre booking, first in best dressed.
* 2 centralized cooking eating areas which bring people together. "Nice!"
* Toilets cleaned daily, well maintained and with hand sanitizer.
* Locking food boxes as a disincentive for the bears. "I know, we don't have any F ing bears!!!"
* A centrally located notice board.
* And best of all, a dedicated, low teck slack line area next one of the eating areas. "So good."
My enthusiasm is not in competition with other stake holders, Friends of Arapiles (Lou) CliffCare (Tracey) who are doing great work, but to add my perspective, "yes my perspective," and bring in another element, "The Mt Arapiles Camp Ground Users Group." So there you have it, I have shown my hand, I am a one man (person) band! And can't even play a trumpet!!!
Just one more thing, I found The Chief camp area to be pretty much litter and rubbish free. I our case I find that the The Pines\Gums camp areas to be a shit hole with the amount of rubbish that is left around. I find this behavior disrespectful. LOL

Robbie with logical suggestions like those you'll put those who sit on committees and go in circles out of a job. You'll get banished to the the naughty corner of the araps social set for upsetting the group think.
Forgot. That already happened.
Stick it to em old man. I'm right behind you (heading the opposite direction laughing like a loon). Keep tilting at that windmill.

Yes Robbie, I would go for something similar to this. The big issue is , if I am travelling and I either don't own a smartie pants phone [ with appropriate app ] or it is flat? Should I go to the council and annoy the shit out of them? I don't know what was wrong with the old system. Oh yes I do, none of the money went on facilities. Whoops, sorry parks.

Do you still bash in pitons?

There's a fair few at Araps so I don't think the monument would go unappreciated - though Dec Crag is probably considered a monument in it's own right... Then there's Plaque wall and the Gums toilet door!
And of course coming from Sydney, we always stop at the dog on the tucker box and big koala...
I'm sure Dave Jones has considered something in the past - he's probably collected enough booty to sculpt a whole climber statue with moving joints..
