What do you want to see in the distance if you ever summit Frenchmans Cap or Federation Peak?

After defending our Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area against Tony Abbott's attempts to delist high conservation value forests, the Hodgman state government is now proposing to allow logging and mining under a draft management plan.

It also wants to open up protected wilderness areas to private development.

If you cherish the wild, undeveloped nature of Tassie's wilderness please speak up. Your submission can be as long or short as you like, but let them know our wilderness is too precious to lose.

The World Heritage Area has a successful management plan that's been in place since 1999. The plan was due for review, but what should have been a straightforward process has been delayed and shrouded in secrecy by a government seemingly intent on pushing through development at the cost of the environment.

After the decades spent getting this area protected it would be devastating to endanger it through mismanagement.

Help us protect Tasmania' spectacular wilderness and write a submission to the government's draft management plan before 22 March 2015. Full details are on the state government’s website: http://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/conservation/tasmanian-wilderness-world-heritage-area/new-tasmanian-wilderness-world-heritage-area-management-plan.

The Environment Defenders' Office has a handy comparison guide of the 1999 and draft plans: http://www.edotas.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Jan-2015-Draft-TWWHA-management-plan-key-issues.pdf.

If you have photos or stories of facilities or natural values within the World Heritage Area that have suffered from government under-funding please send them through to senator.milne@aph.gov.au with the subject “TWWHA management plan”. Christine will incorporate this information into her submission to the management plan process.

P.S. Tonight at 8.05pm Radio National will be re-broadcasting the Wild or Wicked debate held a few weeks ago. A recording of the debate can also be found here;

The 'handy comparison guide' 1999 to 2015 Management Plans is a telling document.
http://www.edotas.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Jan-2015-Draft-TWWHA-management-plan-key-issues.pdf.

It would seem that there is a lot in the 2015 proposals that has not yet been made clear to the general public...

Without having fully done my homework (yet), this passage about the 2015 DMP is a worry;
>
The 2015 Draft states that the change in name from “Wilderness Zone” is “a measure of respect for the perspective of Tasmanian Aboriginal people” concerned that the term ‘wilderness’ denies their prior occupation and ongoing cultural use of these areas.
>The 2015 Draft provides the views of members of the Tasmanian Aboriginal community in relation to this tension.
>The 2015 Draft does not include protection of wilderness quality as a key management objective.

That statement may be a hard thing to verify, but my crap-detectors tingled when I read it, because my first impression was that the new management plan is usurping legitimate claims and twisting them to commercial ends like forestry, mining and tourism development.
~> ie, there is a huge difference between traditional aboriginal usage of 'wilderness' and what is being proposed in the new draft management plan!

C'mon Chocky readers, don't let out of sight - out of mind - good old apathy, dictate your response to what is worth preserving for the long term benefit of all*.
(*Includes the voiceless natural environment components).
