Which blue mountains town to live in? |

Will be moving to the bluies at some point soon but don't know which town to aim for. blackheath would be my first guess for being close to good sport climbing and I hear there's a good climbing community there. But it does seem pretty small town with not much going on. katoomba is not far away and I presume would have more going on and still have a strong climbing community. Any lived at both? preferences?

I'd live in bleakheath again. Tombtown does not inspire. Leura is..... Leura. Good for whisky only. Wenty is under the radar but makes bleakheath look like kings cross for excitement. Mt vic is lovely. Especially if you like fog.
Seriously if you like climbing blackheath or mt vic.

On the two random samplings of Katoomba night-life while attending Climbing Festivals spaced seven years apart, I chuckled at that name corruption as it fits well.
I am not a capitalist, but would have thought that small-ish towns would take advantage of tourism numbers inflated by large events due greater numbers of people wanting meals etc.,
... but not so for Ktombtown.

Absolutely. The place is a hole. Given how pretty the town is it really is surprising the amount of ratbags there are there. Blackheath seems nice and big enough. The other towns are a bit smaller but most have local pubs and you can still easily go to blackheath or Katoomba for shopping and other services. (Wentworth Falls also seems nice.)
(I don't live up there but those are my observations as a non local.)

I'm curious too, we are considering a move up there in a while. One of our criteria was also to consider the relative commute to Sydney, as we'd likely need to get there a couple times a week for work. At the moment we reckon maybe the distance is arbitrary once you're up there, so go for what we like best (most likely Blackheath)... keen to hear more.

The Backpackers Hostel is the hot place for pick ups.

I can confirm that Blackheath to Sydney is a loooooong way for work.

I enjoy trying to determine the most accurate line between the "West Penrith" of the Lower mountains and the hippy retiree tendencies of the Upper mountains every time I drive up.

A lot of my colleagues commute from the blueys, the key is to find somewhere that all trains stop at (not Blackheath or Medlow)
Glenbrook has a pretty good reputation... Halfway..

I used to live in Hazelbrook, which was OK. Yes, my mates who lived further up used to refer to it as West Penrith but it didn't worry me. It didn't take very long to drive up to good climbing spots and there were lots of beautiful walks and waterfalls around Hazo. Driving home after climbing on a Sunday could be a chore as the traffic used to really limp back down the hill.

The fun police making all the unrealistically low (and varied), speed limits for the hill (both sides), didn't really help that either...

On the contrary - we counted 25 speed changes from Mt Vic to the M4 one trip - that was "fun"
