In another thread about testing slings and ropes Richard Delany from
RopeLab says he'd run a climbing workshop in Melbourne. A lot of his work is rescue and rope access but he has some great stuff to say on climbing gear / rope work etc, see the video's on his site / YouTube.
He'd run a Melbourne workshop if there is enough interest, I'd be up for it, anyone else?

I'd certainly be interested.

Just watched one of his videos. Amazing. It's like being drawn into an alternate universe where Bob Ross was born Australian and took up climbing instead of painting.

One might also get a fair bit of interest by advertising through the major clubs like VCC, NZAC or MUMC.

Yes, I'd be interested.

Interested also, though due the distance involved for me, I'd like further detail beforehand re agenda items covered, cost? etc.
It would also give me impetus to get my act together and hand over some slings for testing to destruction.

Six so far — might not be enough to make it worth Richards while. Any more?

I'm interested though would need to confirm date/time to make sure I'm able to commit.

Tim - I don't know that the numbers you're seeing here should really be taken as indicative of how many would attend if a workshop were organised, just because Chockstone has a limited audience (compared with Sabu's suggestion of advertising through VCC, MUMC, etc) and people will be hesitant to put their hands up without a date, cost or venue having been locked in. Unfortunately though in order to get more people to commit, you'd need to first lock in the workshop... Catch-22 when you're trying to determine whether the workshop is viable!
However, I'd certainly expect that there'd be sufficient people interested if a workshop were to go ahead in Melbourne. Consider that Andrea and Lee's performance climbing workshop at Lactic last year drew around 50 participants over two sessions, and the cost of that was twice what Richard is charging for his workshops in Sydney. (Though travel expenses would probably inflate his prices a bit if he were to run them in Melbourne.) So, I'm not sure if you'd actually be organising this, or if you're just trying to give Richard an idea of whether it's feasible, but I think a better first step than trying to gauge interest on Chockstone would be to look at how much it would cost to run, and then figure out from that how much he'd need to charge and how many people would need to attend, and then maybe just assume that the workshop would draw a bare minimum of 20 participants and decide whether or not to go ahead with it on the basis of that.
As for me, I probably wouldn't attend, just because it sounds like it'll be a lot of basic mechanics for climbers who don't have a background in classical physics or mechanical engineering, and that isn't me, but it does sound like it would be extremely beneficial for a lot of other people, and I'm now quite tempted to sign up as a RopeLab member instead.

Hi Dave
I'm not organising the workshop — purely self interest as I'd like to do one. Thought posting on it here might reveal the level of interest and persuade Richard to run one in Vic.

What! I check it several times a day! Thought everyone else was too!

I'm not on those networks, I guess a more formal offer from Richard could go out there, i.e.

Agreed

Damn, its the long weekend. I imagine many would be off climbing (myself included).

That's for roping technicians though, and sounds rather different to his climbers' workshop. I wonder if he'll be running a climbing one separately.

I'll make sure the content is interesting and relevant for all who attend.
The climbing workshop at StPeters was an idea I had to try but climbers are difficult to read. Not sure if it's the $ or the time but I only had 6 turn up.
Given the extra travel to get to Melbourne I probably won't run a climbing specific workshop in Melbourne.
When I say Roping Technicians I guess I mean those who have more of an interest than just tying a knot.
People that have come to the 1-day workshop have included:
Climbers, Slackliners, Rope Swingers, Rescue Techs, Rope Access Techs, Entertainment riggers, Industrial riggers, Climbing Instructors, ...
All of the climbers that have attended have given very positive feedback.
