I'm leaving for The Arapiles on Friday and am planning for a quick night stop over in the way. I'm just looking for an out of the way place I can stop driving, pitch a tent next to the car and sleep till dawn. A nearby toilet for my morning dump would be a bonus.
Does anyone have any good out of the way (but not too out of the way) spots for this?

Eds place, but only if you have had your vaccinations first.
Other than that it depends which route you are taking and how far you expect to get along it by the time you want to stop.

Greens Lake in VIC is a fairly pleasant spot to set up a tent (and has toilets).

Turn-off the highway at Benalla onto the Midland Highway.
1 or 2k down the road (there's a sort of bypass round Benalla) there's a billabong/truckstop on the left. Good for camping and a bit off the road.
Breakfast at Shepparton.

Richardson's bend on the murray. 2 minutes of highway 20m out of albury. not for weekends or school holidays though, prob full of boguns. no loos. pretty and quiet mid week though.
the picnic area and loos at the edge of rushworth. I've just slept in the van there a few times. I expect you could throw a mat under the picnic shelter without drama if it's already late when you get there.
that dam just north of the violet town-bendigo rd whose name is currently escaping me. Has a few picnic areas around it with loos. Again, be wary of weekends/school holidays/boguns/waterskiers.
the free RV stop on the R on the way into Bendigo. Always full of grey nomads but camping seems totally accepted and has loos.
Newbridge (newhaven or new something or another between bendigo and St arnaud) Rec reserve on R just before river. Might have a token fee on it these days.

We used to camp in the picnic shelter in a park in Violet Town on the way back from school trips to Araps with Narrabundah college in the 90s. There was usually about 25 of us I think (students and teachers). The local kids walking to school did often seem a bit perplexed by the band of gypsies that had taken up residence over-night, but we never caught any sh1t from any authorities about it.
