May as well do this the social-media way and solicit input online.

Continuing on from another thread, what do you think should happen at the Pines campground at Arapiles?

The problem with this survey is that the only options are mono-cultures when the best solution is probably a well-planned mix.

I think they might like more rainfall than is available at Arapiles, but otherwise they would work well, especially with endemic natives as perimeter-understory.

I'm not treey greeny thing expert. But I do thing more thought needs to be put into this than simply; "Lets plant native pines!"

I don't see why we need to stick to native. There is a need for shape and amenity, as long as the tree can survive the conditions (and not endanger the broader environment) then it should be considered suitable.

Though it will be hard convincing NPs of all this. But they are the ones camping there are they?

Pinus Radiata is described in Weeds of Australia as " a weed of roadsides, urban bushland, open woodlands, disturbed sites and waste areas."

I don't want to support re-planting a weed at Arapiles.

Speaking of weeds, what about hemp? Which variety to plant will need to be agreed upon. Old timers can make their own ropes (which will save the caterpillars) and dirty hippies can do what they're want to do while the rest of us sit around and enjoy the ensuing good times...

EDIT: think of the possibilities; Arapiles could become the beacon of earth friendly climbing and manufacturing and possibly capitalism. Behold, Hemp Arapilesandsteingebirge. Hemp protection; hemp clothes; hemp ropes; hemp RP's... We would need to select a few overlords to guide this project and for labor we could enslave long term residents of the Pines. They can still stay for undefined periods and climb all they like; provided their daily quotas are accomplished. Dirty hippies the world over would love it... We'll slap an 'organic' sticker on everything, call it wwoofing and make a killing;) if in the event if a labor shortage we'll annex (enslave) Nati;)

I am with you Kieran. Plant a mix of local tree species while making sure that eucalypts with a propensity to drop branches are excluded. P. radiata is a weed and should not be used at all. The planting of Casuarinaceae (she-oak family) should be encouraged.

What ever they choose - industrial strength super tree guards will be required; otherwise drunk/irresponsible/unaware campers will trample/tie tents to/otherwise damage new plans.

The leaf litter and other top-soil encouraging techniques can be created with fenced off beds - just a few - but it would basically help the flora stay fresh.

I agree. We should also remove all fixed gear and abseil anchors, tear up and replant the campground/roads (with native species of course!), pull down the comms tower, power-lines, toilet block etc, which currently despoil the pristine Arapiles World Heritage area.

ps. Don't be racist against pine trees man. Just because they weren't born here, doesn't mean they can't contribute to our society (by providing shade).

There are casuarinas throughout the dry areas of Australia and around Arapiles.

There is a large industry built on the planting of choice land in Australia with radiata pine. Many houses possibly including yours will testify to that if they could. Go and tell them that they shouldn't plant more pines ... The argument that you shouldn't plant them because they are "a weed" is ridiculous. They are relatively easy to control and have provided a great service to the history of Australian climbing.

The absolute rediculousness of this of this weed based root sprout with fruit such as we see on the front page of todays Sydney morning herald, where some crazy greeny is pushing for laws against the manufacture of gender based toys such as the barbie doll and tonka type trucks because of the belief that they lead to problems such as 'domestic violence and the gender pay gap'.
Give me a break!! That's just pure sand based intellectualism.
Give me the pines at Araps and lets go climbing!!

A long time ago, before I was younger than today I used to dream before I fell asleep. On one occasion I would dream that I was the ruler of all the world- not just Australia, not just just before New Ginny butt before that, before It, somewhere in the atmosphere of 'I am Poo'
Then I fell asleep.
Yass I was there. Yass I was diving into water. Yass I was It, drawing down into water from her elevated throne.
Chin Chin- No, Scotch for me thanks.
