I am relatively new to Australia, an although your thread makes at least half sense to me, but because I don't know the history, please enlighten me as a prety basic kind of climber, wtf is SYL?
I assume a route that shut KIm Carryon down?

What I dont understand is if a climber loves climbing, why would one route end there career?

Ok a pissed typo, but the questions are still relevant.
I doubt a retired climber reads this site, so he aint gonna anser.

I'll settle for what SYL means from you, cos I dont expect you to have the exact answer fro KIM.

still dunno what SYL is but have looked up the Raps guide an it says Stefan Glowacz getting Lord of The Rings known as The Ring Route was a demoralising experience for Klm, but it was no fluke as he went on an did second acsent of Punks in Gym soon after.
sounds like Klm had named the route somthin else but didnt get up it then was beaten to it so maybe this was just a tanty he chucked insted of a penis accident in a bike chain causing him to give up like u suggest.

SYL = Serious Young Lizards, Kim's projected name for the ring route. Saw him fall off the last hard move around March '85 with Wolfgang Gullich holding the ropes ( I actually have a rather dark slide with him on the finishing holds where you gain the upper slab.) I think he actually got onto the slab and slipped on one occasion the following summer as well.
Failing on the ring route was not the only reason Kim walked away BTW, he was offered a plum job by Mammut in Switzerland starting in early 1986 so once his motivation with his last project dropped he pointed Stefan Glowacz at it shortly before he left.
The wally posting all the shite on this thread is right about one thing, A Carrigan book would definitely be worth a read, I always liked his writing.
