Stemming from Photo Gallery and other musings.
Why is Nowra the pits of the pits according to most here..
But I see some if not most come and climb here...
We have great cafes, arts and music...
Or do you judge Nowra by 5 mtrs from the rock from the behaviour of mostly visiting climbers or something that a mate told a friend that knew something that happened 15 years ago.?

Why bag Nowra? Here’s some random musings over the years…

First went to Nowra years ago. Dunno if it was the beaten up old Valiant I was driving, the SA plates, the flannies I wore in the mistaken belief that tryhard bogan was the way forward, or my sketchy mates, but everywhere I went I was accosted by dodgy looking types wanting to buy pot off me.

Spent a night in the rotunda in the park in the middle of town. Some dude in a greatcoat woke me at 3am, to tell me “don’t worry mate, just gonna keep my stuff here” before stashing a garbage bag in the bushes next to where I slept. It was gone in the morning. I was just glad to still be alive, or for that matter, at least, to still have a tight pecker…

They got rid of Nowra fair. Say no more. But seriously, to create it in the first place? What sort of clientele were they catering for? For those who have no idea what I’m on about, imagine Alice in Wonderland set in a supermarket…

Why did Rosies (the real one, not the namesake) burn? Not suspicious, surely?

First time I ever saw a human turd, unburied, at the bottom of a climb? Thommos…

First time I ever saw smashed glass all over the carpark to a crag? Thommos…

First time I ever bought a library fundraising sticker “Get all the answers where? Shoalhaven city library” Nowra…the old biddy behind the counter couldn’t believe her luck (see my first paragraph for a possible reason as to why I was purchasing said item) and immediately tried to sell me the remaining 1999 unsold stickers she still had…

Dropping some punter off ‘ain’t no sunshine’ for an early morning photo shoot then making up over donuts at Berry…and eating donuts every subsequent visit. What is it they say about remembering a place by it's gastronomic offerings?

As I get older, and my grades start to drop, the actual climbs I ever did fade away. Memories of the friends I made (including some dude called rope donkey who responded to my chockstone desperate and dateless add and took me to the ‘new Nowra’ which was much like the ‘old Nowra’, only without random turds, rubbish, and solid rock) and the places I visited, begin to take over.
Nowra.
Nothing like it.
Love it, for making even the obscurest Grampians chosspile so attractive…

Nowra Fair no more? Sad to hear that. Was the highlight of a rest day!

Was that you who dropped me? Lucky to walk away that day!

Wait are you talking about Nowra the town or Nowra climbing?
I'm from Lake Macquarie - and even I have a low opinion of the average Nowran.

No luck about it - that patch of soft dirt between the rocks was meant to be! That's the kind of karma that results from trusting some complete stranger, who's never seen a gri gri before, to belay you with a gri gri...

Reasons to like Nowra:
The climbing is good
The rock is good
The coffee is good
The town is far superior to most rural/coastal towns in Australia.
Never seen a break in at the car park
Never had a drama with a local
Stiff to do if you're trained off
Not 11 hours drive from Sydney

The overwhelming majority of towns in Australia are sh#t and I wouldn't stop for petrol in them. At least Nowra has a couple of places to eat, climbing, mountain biking...

Reasons to not like Nowra:
The climbing unmemorable.
The rock is shit.
It's dark and damp in winter, sticky in summer and smelly all year round.
The portion of the climbing community that I don't want to be associated with seem to gravitate there.
Every climb that isn't overhanging is overgraded.
It's 2 hours from Sydney

I'm a Nowra fan. Pretty much has something for everyone especially in the low to middle sport grades lacking in the Bluies. When it's good, the rock and features are some of the best you will get on soft sandstone. Good to see that there is a now more of a local scene. It's not Ceuse but y'all know that right?

Top climbing spot, and it's great that the d1ckheads who don't like it don't go there, so I don't have to encounter them.

... Unless it gets revised in an updated guide, and comes out in a very much 'politically correctus - (save us from ourselves) - dumbed down history* ' version?

(*See the name changes to route names that has happened in this process).

Re bagging Nowra;
The original route names reflected a certain mentality to be found there at the time...
& some would argue it hasn't changed much since.

PS, although I thought those names often to be below an acceptable standard, I accept the diversity; and lament the potential-loss of that history / time-capsule snippet of our climbing-culture.

Nothing wrong with Nowra. Its got some great climbs, good camping, and the south coast is fantastic from surf to scenery and can be combined with a trip to Point Perp. I have never had to line up for a climb, or pay for parking (apart from the time I didnt read the sign in the woolies carpark and left my car there all day). Wouldnt travel the world for the climbing, but Ive been to lots of worse crags on world travels, and wish I had more long weekends free.

I have had my car broken into in Nowra and I had the worst pizza of my life there (both circa 1996).

There was a lovely looking camp spot we found whilst looking for a short cut to the far end of Thompsons - do people brave leaving their camping stuff about there these days?

Thompson's is a surprisingly nice climbing spot (except when overwhelmed by the noise of power boats). The rock is mostly really nice, but slippery nonsense in a few spots. It used to get rather busy, I expect it still does if you aren't climbing there mid week in November as we were.

South Central is dark, dank, ugly and slippery. Cheesedale is much nicer. The Grotto seemed quite ok for the very few times I've been there.

The bit of New Nowra we went to is ok if you go there with realistic expectations. The guide writers got a little excited. It is not "crazy cool rock" or "limestone like pockets". These people need to get out and climb in a few more places! It is however, quite good fun, with some bits like the top half of cafe cruiser wall being really good. There is a lot of manky rock as well though (like the bottom half of cc wall). The Goldmine was also well shaded and totally climbable on quite warm days. There was also some nice camping on the way out there - again, any dramas with leaving your kit set up out there?

The highlight of Nowra though might have to be baby wombats though. Camp at the animal park and you might be lucky enough to have them wandering around camp. Or at least adult ones. And I'm still waiting for those 2 crocodiles to get out and establish a southern colony with global warming.

We were having dinner at the Australian Hotel a couple of weekends ago and some guy opened the back door and yelled "Ya missus can suck my d!*k" to no one in particular. That might have something to do with it. But I am sure Nowra, like any town has its fair share of idiots.

Where is the good coffee/cafes? any recommendations?

Hmm.
Both User-ID's 'The Hex', and 'Hex' (one and the same person), listed their location as being Nowra.
He also posted lots, ... before being binned.
What does that say about enuff sed?
;-)
