It's probably a record year for camping fees paid.

How do you figure that?

So what's the go with fees? Is it really $5pp,pn? Are there alternatives?

Times have changed since it was $2pp,pn and a coffee to the ranger if you forgot to pay the night before.

Yes. Booked via CC on the internet.

>Are there alternatives?

Not within walking distance of the climbing. You could stay at the Nati Lake caravan park or at the National Hotel or at a B&B in Natimuk somewhere.

They have.

So can I get my money back if it pisses down and I leave early?

How do I prove I've paid?

Also thanks for the info Ajfclark - I'm just unhappy with the new arrangements.

The ranger can look up your car rego on his iPad -assuming you have a car, which is a pretty safe bet as you're driving from Canberra. As to which tent(s) belong to your car, ranger shrugs his shoulders.

Interesting. In that case if you're not in the system, how does the ranger know you're not just up for the day? If they can't pair you up to a tent they can't prove you camped overnight.

At Arapiles that could be a problem for them due less formally designated sites, but at Buffalo they 'do the rounds' of the campsites morning and afternoon, and I'd expect they would soon be aware of a tent on an unreserved site to come back and check on. Likewise if the site was reserved, then the rightful booker would no doubt let Ranger know it was occupied by someone else too.

Which is how it always has been. If someone lies and says they're not camping it's fairly difficult to prove otherwise.

Which is why I found it so frustrating when my honesty of volunteering to the ranger that I hadn't YET payed my camping fees resulted in a big fine. Being somebody who has always paid my camping fees the only thing that I learnt from that encounter was not to be honest.

How much patto?

$170 or $180.... "Big fine" is of course relative... With the price of campsites at Buffalo, it doesn't seem so big... But it is more than a month of camping at the Pines!

So if I come down to Victoria in my bongo van I should be able to avoid all camping fees? I'd have to actually be busted sleeping in my van.

Avoiding camping fees in almost all Victorian camping site is fairly trivial and has pretty much always been so. All the more easier if you are sleeping in a van or car.

For the system to work it relies on honesty. My desire to be honest and respectful of the NP rules was significantly decreased by their approach to things.

Yeah, a bit rough.

$5 per person per night isn't so rough Ollie! Yes it would be nice not to have to pay as we used to but in the scheme of camping fees in Oz, it's pretty good for what you get - site, water, toilets and rubbish removal.

Don't go over to the gramps. It will cost you $19 per site to bush camp and $38 for most campgrounds and $48 for some of them. Feel free to eloquently but politely tell PV what you think.

Did that at Buffalo last weekend, but saying it to a Ranger cut no ice, as the one I spoke to felt that they were powerless against the backroom boffins.

I think the solution (at least for Buffalo), would be to reintroduce the revenue stream PV is obviously missing from Park entry fees.
That way the majority of park visitors underpin infrastructure maintenance, and camping fees can be reduced to basic levels again as campers are the minority group that even with the huge increase in their fees are never going to be able to fund the $ actually required by the system for that service.

My thoughts exactly. I used to pay their fees when they seemed reasonable, but never again on principle. Sure $5 is reasonable but when they've messed things up everywhere else, I'll avoid giving them anything ever again.
As far the Gramps goes, plenty of State Forest on the boundary close to climbing areas which is all free. eg Plantation campground.

Funny how no-one blinks an eye at $30 for getting into a ski resort and $700 for 90 days of skiing.

I sure would blink, that's why I don't ski.
I'll start paying $38 dollars a night to stay at Buandik once they install a chair lift up to the Gallery.
