I can't work up any enthusiasm whatsoever for aid climbing, so I'll give that weekend a miss. But have never been to Buffalo, & would like to one day with someone who knows their way around. Have been to Wingello and Booromba, and like both in their very different ways, would be happy to go back any time.

Blue Water Holes sounds cool, and a great spot for an adventure ride - is the climbing any good (ie some nice easy climbing with a bit of air)?

Sorry, am in danger of derailing a motorcycle discussion by talking about climbing...

So - Mitas - yes, heards lots about them - but they don't appear to make something in or near 180/55 17in or 120/60 17in for the front. But I'm probably a little more modest in my offroad ambitions (as is my bike - she says "I'm a Supermoto, not SuperEnduro, fool!") and am more looking for something durable / capable on dirt roads and easy fire trails, not deep mud / sand / single track

Haven't climbed there yet, though if phillipivan gets his motorcycle act together again, it might happen!
The climbing is more likely to be an adventure rather than the riding, as it is two wheel drive - cage accessible.

By all accounts the Black Dog Ride Day was a success, and the inaugural Wangaratta event had 188 riders and 39 Pillions turn up.
Before the ride, the Lifeline co-ordinator for this area gave us a short speech that included scary statistics for this area that I was unaware of.
Lions Club did alright catering for breaky, and lunch at the other end of the ride too.

Interestingly only two or three other dirt capable bikes turned up, & no others of my brand. This led me to speculate that at almost any gathering of motorbikes there will likely be no two the same, as apart from huge variety available, even most stock versions are tricked up after-market-customised fashion.

It was a demographic of rider that I don't often have much overlap with, and the 2½ hour ride they chose was a fairly soft-option for this part of the world given the amount of great riding roads located around here. No doubt other experienced riders in the group would have felt the same*, but the cross section of ages / gender / rider-ability & machines, meant catering for the common denominator.
(* Another notable standout was one bloke who turned up in full racing leathers on a full race [replica?] almost current(?) motorcycle...)

I chuckled during the ride while going through some of the small local towns, when I saw cages trying to enter the road we were on having to give way, ... for an extended period of time, ... due ... the ... continuous ... progression ... of ... bikes!

Despite the differences for me it was a pleasant education, and the cause was what it was all about anyway.

Spot the odd one out...

Adventure motorbike takes precedence!

Aka; the mob got split many times bunching up while giving way at intersections.

(Nah, I just needed to get away from the heavy-duty dude creeping up behind me!)

Post edit on a different topic.

This chocky Poll-thread didn't elicit much response from you lot. Yep, you know who you are.
Does this mean that you ride only for purposes other than to ride to cliffs to go climbing?
Says the one-eyed poster ...

As I'm sure you all are...just a little reminder to be careful on the road.

Got taken out two Fridays back down here in tassie. Hire car with 3 tourists came around mid-hairpin 2/3rds in my lane. Didn't have much chance of avoiding a hit completely (especially as I'm relatively unskilled as a rider) but did manage to avoid the front of the car and just get taken down by the side/mirror.

No real injuries but I would have been missing a knuckle or two judging by the state of the armor on a glove. So, as a mate once said to me: "Always wear your gloves, always, if you ever think not to just ask yourself; 'if I come off, who will wipe my ass?'"

Damn shame too, being only two corners from home on Huon road, one of the best pieces of riding real estate around.

I am glad to hear that you are still around and relatively ok, as that sounds like a scenario that could have been very much worse for outcome than it turned out.
I hope your bike wasn't too damaged in that event also.

You raise an interesting concept, as 'being careful' is one thing, but like the objective dangers found within climbing, the factors we have no control over on the roads are a real lottery when it comes to safety.

Re safety gear, the oft quoted maxim of "All the gear, all the time", is something definitely worth adhering to; especially when statistics suggest that a high percentage of road accidents happen within a short radius of one's home.
Sure, on a heatwave day if I ride to my local town for whatever, the inconvenience of wearing appropriate safety gear seems high, but as your mate quoted to you, the alternative possibilities resulting from not wearing it, seem worse to me.

(Note to self; ... must make the effort to ride Tassie sometime.☺ )

Blimey! Sounds like you took a sensible line whether intentional or not. Glad you are ok.

Sorry, I don't know anyone in my part of the world looking for a bike of that type, but good luck with it mousey, you annoying offspring of an adolescent rodent / closet dwelling* evil mofo biker you... JC!
(*How come you never posted about any of your motorcycling adventures to this thread before?).

PS The price you want for it wouldn't even buy you one wing of a wingsuit would it?

Australia's longest running motorcycle rally is on again.

I am hoping to attend, and go a longer way around this time (delaying my departure till after I attend Banff Mtn Film show at Albury), and heading north to Orange (central NSW), to come back at it from that side with some mates from up that way.
A good excuse to recce other potential climbing sites along the way... Anyone else interested in joining us?

I won't bother to post a Trip Report this time.
~> Suffice to say, you missed one of the best ever Alpine Rallies!

Fireworks are a rarity these days, and they were in abundance* at this Rally.
(*Organiser has a pyrotechnic licence).

The antics of a motorcycle that reached 299 km/hr while stationary were interesting, though NOT something that I would advocate.

The burning of a VW magnesium block on a campfire, generally considered a ritual, was also interesting this time, due a direct 'hit' with the accelerant of water, caused a good explosion, that thankfully avoided people and tents.

I even caught up with a couple of old climbing mates...

Enough said.

Glad to hear it was a cracking rally, i've never got to one despite previously living in Canberra, near to many of the previous rally sites and pre conditioned to riding in painfully cold conditions. I've got the Spaghetti rally most recently and a Ragged fringe before that, but the Alpine rallies' multi marque or who cares what ride as long as you do, has always appealed.

That is what appeals to me too, along with the locations and time of year...

Re Spag & Ragged;
Near Whitfied Vic? & Gloucester NSW?
You ride a Moto Guzzi? Ducati??

Moto Guzzi Lemans 111, the Ragged I went to was when it was held in outside of Cowra, but yep it's now held near Gloucester. The Spag is near Whitfield down by the King river I think. Great spot and a top ride from Melbourne.

Tim, when if we ever make it out for a climb, Im going to steal your ride. Consider yourself warned.

Are you verifying his where-abouts to avail yourself of this?

If a man could ever have a crush on a motorbike the old Le Mans would be my squeeze, or distantly admired object of desire. Or whatever, you get the idea. My cx 500 is the poor mans jap version of a guzzi.

Maybe I don't get the idea.

I notice a tenuous link to the thought process you expressed.
An early (poor taste) Friday-funny if you like...

OK, I usually ignore this thread because I know it's just M9's excuse to froth about mokabikes (my 3 year old's word - he loves them). Lucky I checked this one - I used to have a very nice CB250T that I bought from Mike Myers, hmmmmm, perhaps I shouldn't go there...

My dad works for Honda Australia Rider Training.

He rides a Ducati....

In other news, I got my P2 motorcycle license yesterday. Automatic transmission restriction gone, I can now ride a real motorcycle as my mate would say, I already sold the scooter.
